What is this juvenile mammal?

Found this baby critter in SE Utah in the sandstone slickrock. Looks a bit like a baby squirrel but it is much too big.

How big was it? Looks like a baby ground squirrel but could be a baby marmot if it is a lot bigger. There are some big squirrels in Northern AZ - Southern Utah.

God bless him, it looks like a fox squirrel. Not the red fox squirrels but the one called "Sherman's Fox Squirrel". I've raised a few of them by hand, years ago when I did a lot of wild animal rehab. They are precious. They are soooo much easier to raise than regular squirrels because they are not spastic. And they are probably 4 times the size of a regular grey squirrel. If you want to raise it, use goats milk as formula, NOT any of the puppy/kitten formulas. All those forumlas have been "improved" and now if you try to use any of the pup/kit formulas for wild babies, they will die from soft bone breakage.

cowbirds are the only ones i know that lay their eggs in other birds nests. I get lots of red wing blackbirds here in spring thru summer. There are often juvenille cowbirds with the adult red wings. The cowbirds are bossy and pushy with other birds and take over the feeders. Lucky that the young are on their own soon after they can fly on their own and they leave out before the redwings. I put a couple of platform feeders out in a tree away from the other feeders and the blackbirds and cow birds and starlings seem to stay at the platform feeders mainly.

How about a plain ole mole? They are stubby sometimes grey although usually more brown, have the big digging paws in front making them do a funny little shuffle when walking-at least when walking on my hardwood floors! They get in by accident 1 or 2 times a year & have trouble finding their way out so I don my leather fireplace gloves & grab the mole just behind his head-where a neck would be if they had one!
