Birds and other mobile features in the garden 2013 #8
Comments (89)Kind of funny story - a couple of years ago the guy across the street trotted over to show me this mysterious worm he found on his tomato plant. He wondered if it was something very rare because he had never even heard of a worm with horns and perhaps UCONN might be interested in having this specimen and maybe, just maybe, he had discovered something that could be beneficial to some plants here in tobacco valley and he could breed them and make money! He said there were many of them on his three patio tomato plants. "Whatta ya think, Jane? Should I put it in a jar?" I asked to see it in my gloved hand and as this guy was envisioning $50 bills, the silly worm reared it's head with horns and mouth seeking something to bite. I dropped it on the driveway and with a flash of my right foot, the mysterious money-making dream shrank into a bite-less green blob as my neighbor went into one of the most shocked and crestfallen expressions I'd seen in a while. I told him he had lost the horn worm lottery and to go home and squish all the others. I have a feeling that my reputation as a nice neighbor lady turned into tough old broad that day in the driveway. Squish 'em, Pixie, Squish 'em - unless you're going into the horn worm raising business. Jane (aka Hard Hearted Hannah)...See MoreBirds and other mobile features in the garden 2015 #1
Comments (81)WTG, Claire! Good bird mother. That's a happy thrush. Glad your power stayed on. What a relief. I can't answer nhbabs's curiosity about why we Southerners only see Hermit Thrushes in the winter, but after checking my 'Thrushes' folder, yup, all the pictures are in winter. They must summer in NH and winter in the flatlands, I guess. Today is the first time I was able to capture a RB Woodpecker twice in flight after leaving the suet cage. Downloaded a free copy of GIMP, (a free rendition of Photoshop) and tried to superimpose the two pictures. I need practice, but here it is: Jane This post was edited by corunum on Tue, Jan 27, 15 at 16:29...See MorePothos Trellis?
Comments (3)Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) growing up a moss pole (or other kind of trellis) is very common. Whether or not the roots attach to the support is not guaranteed. They grow so fast, it will require your assistance to keep the vines wound up/down/around the support occasionally or they will climb up the wall, across the floor, wind around other nearby plants, etc... Comments (14)I took clippings from a pothos at work, and planted them in a pot at home. I put the pot outdoors in a flower box that's mostly shaded. The highest temps in my area have been in the low hundreds occasionally. I leave the plants outside until the temp drops below 30, then I move them it into the garage until spring. There's a row of small windows across the width of the garage door. I watered the pothos with Miracle-Gro a few times, otherwise, I just used tap water. The leaves on this plant are bigger than I've ever seen on a pothos. Some are 8" long by 6" wide. The mother plant at work didn't get anywhere near this size, but it didn't get any light, other than florescent, and it never got Miracle-Gro. Some other pothos I've had for years are also growing larger leaves since I watered with Miracle-Gro. I haven't seen results like this with other plants I water with Miracle-Gro....See MoreTiffany, purpleinopp Z8b Opp, AL
