Trip plan for next week!!!

I'm planning a trip for next week (Mon-Thurs). I've been taking trips with the same guy now since 1999, and we've never been to southern IL or snake road. SO...we were thinking of going there for a couple of days, but are now a bit wary...not knowing if we've missed the opportune time to be there. Can anyone give advice on if this is a good investment of our time to go that way?

We're also thinking of trying south or western KS or the southern MO/northern AR areas. Help me decide!!!!

You've probably missed the most opportune time for snake rd., but thats not to say you wont find alot there or in the nearby areas. A few weeks ago when I was there, I drove around and found a few tin sites that looked very promising. I hope to make it down this summer to check them out.

For road-huggers, the time has passed. Obviously, you get off of the beaten path. The snakes have to go somewhere and the area is snake city. Certainly it is an opportunity to see some great and unique reptiles. If you want a reasonable motel, you will find the Apple Tree Inn in Murphysboro. $55 per night comes with indoor pool and spa. If you go, tell Angelo, the owner, I said hi.

Hi Tami, I'm just north of Oscoda, MI, which is on Lake Huron. We are on an inland lake, Cedar Lake. If you will be coming around this way, give me a holler, we could take a pontoon ride, or have you ride the jet ski! Email me thru "my page" and I'll give you my phone #. bbstx, thanks for asking! I got my stitches out yesterday-YEA! My eyes had seemed more swollen than I thought they should be, so doc had me stop putting the enthramiacyn (sp?) on my eyelids and it has seemed to help. She told me not to wear eye makeup for 10 more days. Not a worry for me, but I don't go into work. I did go look at furniture/accessories for a client yesterday and had my sunglasses on and it was just too hard to see and putting them on and off. I am on day 9 now and they are getting much better since stitches are out! I did think I would be a little farther along with the redness and swelling by now, but everyone heals differently. I think I am normally a fast healer-oh well. Regarding the Invisaligns-I put them off until next week-I didn't really want to go into the dentist office yet until my eyes healed a little more. I will be anxious to get them started by then and will let you know my program on how many trays, etc. How exciting you are on your way!

Jennifer, that sure is cute, but I would sure hate to try to till that. I agree about liking the natural stone, this part of the country is just eaten up with rock. There is a town a few miles away called Rock Island, Oklahoma, there are rock quarries all around this area. Rock use to be cheap, but those days are gone. I have all of the fall tilling done now, except the food plots I am putting in. Neighbor is going to try to have all the fall stuff plant in a day or two. I brush hogged the pumpkin patch yesterday, it will have to cut up with the disc before it is tilled, but I may not have time to do that, I have another hospital trip planned for next week, depending on what is done, I may be down for a month. I expect that Madge or my daughter will shoot me in the foot if I start walking toward a tiller or tractor. We are already getting more okra than we need, I would like to find some way to use it, but Madge and I are both getting to the point that we don't want to do a lot, and she does not want to freeze as much this year. Hwy20, I would spray those stones, I don't like Black Widows or scorpions. Kim, I am feeding your grasshoppers very well, but I will need to send them home before frost, because I wont have enough food to overwinter them. I see on the computer that storms may be pushed this way. I hope we don't get a flash flood like we did earlier in the year, with all the ground I have tilled we wont have any soil left.

Are there any places to camp nearby? We usually just set up a tent for the few dark hours and try to keep it as cheap as possible...

You can camp at Shawnee Pine Hills Campground in the National Forest (I think that is the right name). Its pretty close to Snake Road and you can herp the campground at night too if you feel inclined.

I would think early May might be a good time to find Timber Rattlers, and I imagine a few cottonmouths and water snakes can still be found along the road. Racers, Rough Greens, Ribbons and Black Rats ought to be around as well.

April is probably ideal, but if you herp a wide area and extend your hours into the dark, you shoudl see plenty.

I had the best luck just driving around and checking out abandoned houses and barns. The springs on the south end of snake road are great for salamanders and frogs, if snakes are scant.
