Southern water snake, very vulnerable

One hot Georgia summer there was a need to catch a few southern water snakes for some up close identification features at our forestry camp. We shortly found out that catching the souther water snake by day was not going to happen. Their eye sight is excellent and are gone right away when they spot you.

Night time, however, is totally different. We soon discovered that the southern water snake was vulnerable to light at night, and would come right up to a flashlight along the shore where we were looking. It was a matter of carefully getting their head under control and putting them into a pillow case.

We kept the several southern water snakes, we caught that night, for a day and then released them back into their south Georgia pond. We were all amazed at how vulnerable those snakes were at night, compared to their wariness in the daytime.
