This guy was coiled up on the side of the trail too. I can't tell how long he is, but he didn't move at all when I came by. I'm thinking that this might not be the best place for a nature walk! Thanks for any help you can give.

That is a Florida Cottonmouth. They are venomous, but not really dangerous.

They are not aggressive in any way and when you walk up to one, the generally just freeze and hope you won't notice them. If you get closer, they might flash their white mouth lining at you, but even then they don't usually strike. Just walk on by and leave them alone and no one will be the worse for the encounter. Or just appreciate how cool they are!

You will hear/read a lot of urban legends about Cottonmouths talking about how aggressive they are and how they drop out of trees, chase after people, occur in "nests" and all sorts of ridiculous stuff.

I have seen many hundreds of cottonmouths in my life, throughout their range from South Caroline to the tip of Florida and into the edge of western Texas. I have also been involved in a research project on cottonmouths which necessitated us collecting 40-50 wild Cottonmouths per day (day and night sometimes). I have probably caught 300+ of them myself.

They are not dangerous, but they are venomous. They should be respected but not feared. We are lucky to have such an amazing creature still living across a large portion of the Southeastern US in spite of all the parts of it we've destroyed.

As for this being a dangerous place to walk, you should certainly be watching where you step. They will just try and hide and hope you go away. On cold mornings, I have actually seen Cottonmouths coil up underneath the pine needles. Stay on the trails, watch where you are walking and you will be fine.

I think it sounds like a great place for a nature walk. It seems much better than a nature walk with no nature. Post signs warning people to be aware and enjoy...

Not many people enjoy snakes more than I do, but I have to say, even I would not be happy to have one fall on me out of nowhere before I knew what it was. My story along those lines involves a cat house we built on the back of our home years ago, with a kitty door going out to it. A little verandah for our indoor cats, so they could lay on the cat shelves out there and enjoy the fresh air. Unfortunately, it wasn't screened in, but rather, enclosed with a wide mesh wire fencing. This meant that lizards and snakes and many other creepy crawlies could take short cuts right through it. (Though why anything would WANT to cut through a small enclosed area with three large cats hanging out in it is beyond me.) Suffice it to say, many snakes were cat nabbed and carried proudly back through the cat doors over the years. My husband at the time had a phobia about them, and would end up standing on the chairs or the sofa hollering at me to come get the snake (which was almost NEVER injured in any visible way) and take it outside. It was a funny sight. But he got the last laugh. I got up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night once and stepped right on top of a black racer in my bedroom...in my bare feet...in the dark! There was MUCH screaming and hollering and hopping about coming from ME that time! This one was injured, but definitely still thrashing about. *shiver* THAT will wake you up right quick! Marcia

Ah yes...Lined Snake heaven and full of all sorts of other surprises. That is one of my favorite herping places, but its so close to a metro area and I see so much evidence of irresponsible herping (i,e-not putting rocks back properly) there, that I am glad you haven't disclosed the specific location publically.

Thanks, sportsguy and wayne. Looked up some pictures and pretty sure that's what it was. The tiny size fits, too. From what I read, a brown snake is sub-terranean most of the time so that also makes sense that I found it pulling grass away from the wall. Wish I would have had the presence of mind to try to catch it for a better look (not to try to keep.) It was SO CUTE! He/she is welcome to eat as many slugs and bugs as it can find! Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
