Another great day Wayne! ShaggyBill on another forum summed it up best! You're killing us! Myself I was very excited to find our first snake on property last evening. It was a very reddish redbellied snake about 6 inches long. Also a few ground skinks and one coal skink. For what is supposed to be a very common snake we only find about a dozen a year on property and maybe one or two elsewhere. They are usually found very early in the Spring and late Fall with very few in between. They also run about two to one in favor of the red or brown phase. Have often wondered if that is the norm or just this location.

A good day Wayne! Snakes are very difficult to find now since it is so dry and hot. Observed an interesting encounter recently. Was walking through some short grass in a marshy area when a small bullfrog hopped away in a straight line away from me when a dark coil appeared with a lot of commotion. Turned out to be a large racer who had grabbed the frog by a back leg. It then crawled within 3 feet of me with its head several inches high and the frog only caught by its toes. The frog was about three times the snakes girth so it was quite a battle for a few minutes. The racer somehow managed to swallow the frog backwards which took several minutes. No camera or camcorder but still worth the long time it all took. A very interesting scale pattern on the racer after having swallowed such a huge meal.

Lucky dog. It's been a bad year for me and snakes... (I don't count the black racers in my parents yard... they're just landscape features.) The only snakes I've seen have all been dead on the road ~all year !! My fiancee, however, has been making all kinds of sightings at work... eastern coachwhips, indigos, rough green snakes, yellow and red rats... not nearly in the numbers you're talking about, but at least he's seeing them. Of course with two little ones it's kinda hard to get out and go looking for any... one of these days...

Great day Wayne! Maybe it is still too soon to add up the years totals! My last significant find was a very fresh DOR coachwhip. It was found November 5th. It measured 44 inches and was almost completely black except for a few tiny specks of brown back by the tail. Only good thing about finding any DOR is the chance to examine it and look at the complete snake. Sad to find such an impressive snake only a couple hundred feet from my front yard!
