Short outing today

My wife and I went for a walk today at my favorite local spot. The temperature was 51 degrees and breezy but it was sunny.

We had a decent outing (13 snakes in 1 1/2 hours):

4 Eastern Yellowbelly Racers

4 Intergrade Eastern/Red-Sided garter Snakes

2 Prairie Ringneck Snakes

1 Western Ribbon Snake

1 Northern Water Snake

1 juvenile Osage Copperhead (probably the same one I saw on March 11th).

Good numbers for a somewhat cool day!

We only managed to find 4 snakes yesterday.

It was good to see our first worm snake and an earth snake, plus a couple ringnecks.

Thanks for the report. With the first emergers, it seems once they're out, they're out. We went out yesterday evening at 6:00 pm in 46 degree, cloudy, strong north wind weather, and saw in 15 minutes of searching about 15 Texas brown snakes, 6 rs garters and a large smallmouth salamander (the first of the season, finally)-- all under cold rocks.

I had 2 in Japan, where they don't knock you out, and since I have loads of diverticuli, it was like an hour of torture each time. Back here in the States, thanks to conscious sedation, I didn't know a thing. One minute I was joking to the doctor that I would see if I could resist the drug putting me to sleep, and the next (It seemed), I was waking up. The second time, they gave me the sedation earlier without telling me what it was, and I woke up before they even wheeled me into the procedure room. It was wonderful. In any event, I can't see the necessity for flowers. But do get the test done, if you can. So long as you have conscious sedation, there is no difference between a gastric endoscopy and a colonoscopy, so far as the patient's discomfort is concerned, and they tell me that people with normal intestines don't have as much "discomfort" (THEIR choice of words--you know what mine is!) as I did, anyway.

First three short stories free today : )

I took my blog short stories and published them on Kindle Unlimited! Amazon expanded the 'read inside' section so the first three stories are now available for free. Please read them and let your friends know...if you like them. My next set of short stories will be about my mother's great-grandparents. They were both deaf, but decided to leave their families (and the money) and homestead in the Dakota Territory. While I may go back and turn these short stories into a longer book, I like the idea of getting something down on family history while I can. And short stories are something I can write as I have the time, even with everything else we have going on right now. If anyone has questions about self-publishing on Amazon...there are some great YouTube videos that really helped me!

Fiona, I read an old post of yours about the Pottery Barn Clarissa chandelier. I just had two installed but cannot figure out how to hang the crystals. It says long crystal then big crystal and I understand that but it says "please make sure the drop hook is through the hole at the laciness metal ring by ?reverse location." What is reverse location? Do you remember?

Hi, Wayne...thought I would check out this forum after chatting with you on the other one. (I never even knew it was here!) I'm so impressed that you can go out and find that many snakes in such a short time. I always keep an eye out for them when I'm birding, but it never occurred to me to go lifting up rocks and debris to actively hunt them. I guess I need to go on a field trip with a real herper sometime.

Hope it's okay if I jump in here and chat with you guys a bit.

Welcome! I hope you enjoy the forum. It's only fair that you get to come here and play with the herpers now that I have dubbed you an honorary herper :-). I think its great that your able to bridge the herper world and the gardening world. You are saving a lot of snakes and a few humans from heart attacks with your great educational posts on the gardening forum.

If I am in your area of Florida or you're ever up in my neck of the woods I'd love to show you around and give you some herping tips.

DEAL! That would be fun, and I would be happy to dig out my canoe, even, and take you down the Wekiva. Assuming I'm not too feeble to paddle, these days. I have a very good friend who is a hiker/birder/nature kind of guy who knows all sorts of good trails and things, too. And seeing familiar areas from a herper's viewpoint would be like seeing them all for the first time, wouldn't it? Looking at it in a whole new way.

Maybe I'll make it up to your part of the woods someday, who knows! Stranger things have happened.

Thanks for the welcome and the honorary herper status! That's a great compliment. Thinking here...(always dangerous)...if I am a birder and a herper, does that make me a birdERPER?
