Brief spring sightings - Indiana

I never have my camera when I need it. I visited a park in Indianapolis on Monday March 3rd just as the temperature was plummeting from a balmy 56 down to about 42. I was therefore surprised when I turned over a board next to an ephemeral pond and found a spring peeper, a small-mouth salamander and a baby blue racer. The racer was peeking up from a crawdad hole. Earliest snake sighting I've had in Indiana and NO camera. Went back today (high of 36), turned over the board and there was the racer again. Never saw more than the first two inches of it.

It was a nice promise of spring to come!
