Glade herping in a thunderstorm

Well the weather was pretty nasty today but a friend and I both had the day off so we figured we had to go look for snakes rain or shine.

We went to a new glade (an arid rocky opening area in a forest) we hadn't been to before.

We got caught in a thunderstorm but the snakes were more cooperative than the weather.

Our days finds on the glade in the thunderstorm:

14 Prairie Ringneck Snakes

2 Flatheaded Snakes

1 Rough Earth Snake

1 gorgeous juvenile Speckled Kingsnake

Also two tarantulas..

You forgot to tell them about that eight foot-plus eastern coachwhip we found, shattering the old Missouri record by a whole lot.

Oh wait.

You mean you didn't see it?

Shame, it was a cool snake. :-)

Ah yes...Lined Snake heaven and full of all sorts of other surprises. That is one of my favorite herping places, but its so close to a metro area and I see so much evidence of irresponsible herping (i,e-not putting rocks back properly) there, that I am glad you haven't disclosed the specific location publically.

Valley View Glades is a unique area. We like to go there frequently and we are blessed by living close by. There are some very interesting wildlife there. My kids especially like the Scorpions, Tarantulas, and Black Widows. There is a good population of Lined Snakes there as well.

Thanks Gary. Hey Wayne can you post my Gila Monster pic when you get a chance? It isn't a great picture, because it got blurred a little with motion and its head isn't very visible but it is still a great "see how close I am and see that distinctive gila monster pattern and coloration" shot.

Shame, it was a sweet snake. Sweet looking, anyway. I can't speak for its disposition, though. :-)

On a serious note, next Thursday's looking like a beautiful possible coachwhip day. It's supposed to be like 68 for the high, about 20% precipitation, sunny. I'm thinking about hitting ha ha tonka again.
