the hawk that sounds like a crying puppy is a red shouldered hawk. Red tail makes a long decending whistle. Where I lived as a child we had a lot of those. We have a lot of red shouldered hawks. We dont have red tails where I live now because they are more of an open field dwelling buteo and I'm in the woods. below is a link you might like. Here is a link that might be useful: listen to hawks

Is this a Cooper's Hawk?

It looks from here to be a juvenile Cooper's Hawk, as already stated. The tail on Accipiters is long with wide bands, and this bird has that. As for the differences between Accipiters, juvenile Cooper's Hawks have fine brown chest streaks that usually come short of the belly, and this bird has that. So, good call.

Every blue moon, one will sweep through my back yard on their way to something in either side neighbor's yard. You can't miss it - I'll see a flash out of the corner of my eye but the feathers make such a loud woosh! Then there is usually there is a loud ruckus but I can never catch exactly what is going on... I don't like to garden wearing my glasses. Hehehehe. Carol

Oh, I love them!
I have a little guy (I think...LOL), that hangs in my yard.
I was just watching him through my binocs this morning...that's one patient little hawk!
He's been in the flowering cherry for about an hour now. âº
I got a shot of'm but it's a bit too far away to really see...plus he's perched with his back towards me.
I'm assuming it's a Red-Shoulder...his back is dark grey with several white spots.
