My dog found a turtle

This is the second year in a row that I have found this one(or very similar) walking across my yard. I moved her across the yard in the direction she was heading so my dogs would not bother her. Do they come out of the lake to lay eggs like the Snapping Turtles?

Hi Anita! : )

I believe that is a Painted turtle, and it may be the same one each year. They have a very small home range (a few acres).

Yes, it is breeding.

HI Elly, just how far will she go? I found her quite a ways from the lake. I thought they come just a little ways out to lay eggs. This one was running away from home!

Yuck!! That's your neighbor's pool??? Well, I bet your turtle certainly does enjoy it!! Glad you're getting her back....and also REALLY glad your neighbor has to empty that pool. I love destany's idea....that pool would make a dandy pond with just a few modifications!! I know someone who did that and the results were amazing!!

Adorable baby. I remember the first time I saw one of these in adult size, retention pond (called a lake lol) in Naples. I thought it was a small Loch Ness monster. Snorkel neck sticking up out of the water. Much shyer than the other turtles which we fed bread. Would spook at the least thing. And one day saw one crossing our yard to get to the other retention pond. I think these are my favorite turtles, real personalities and right out of dinosaur-land.

I'm not sure. Perhaps there is a pond nearby? They head to their natal area to breed. Perhaps someone moved it and it was heading home?

Yes, that is an Eastern Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta picta). Males will sometimes wander in search of new homes.
