What is this bird?

Can anyone help me identify this bird I found nearly drowned in my pond? I *think* it's a fledgling, but can't be sure. Smokey grey all over, no mottling. Black eyes, dark beak.

Around here you can't spit without hitting a robin or grackle.

I'm in S. Ontario, Canada.

It looks like a young raven or crow. I think you have both up there.

They are nature's garbage men! I live near a park with mature trees that is sandwiched at the intersection of two busy roads. The turkey vultures settle in on a garage roof across from the park a block from the intersection and just have a buffet! They are magnificent.

No problem Brian, and thank you! Thanks Catherine! Sometimes they would get into our shop bays and try to build their nests in the roof supports. Even if we diligently remembered to kee the doors closed and they couldn't get inside for days, the moment we forgot they would be back.

Beak looks strong like a crow, however brown headed cowbirds take over other birds' nests and hatch early. Don't know if they are born with a brown head or if they get it only at maturity.

My guess is, a red-winged blackbird. The pond's a big hint as they often nest over or adjacent to water. -jp
