Speaking of hawks.... Hannibal is back. I give up....I stopped feeding the birds for two weeks. As soon as I added seed to the feeder, Hannibal was back within minutes. I think his/her nest is somewhere nearby. Yesterday, I was grilling my dinner and viewing the doves scratching around for the dropped seed under the feeder. I walked into the house to get a clean plate for the steak -- maybe all of 3.5 minutes -- came back outside to see nothing but a pile of feathers of a 'former' mornning dove on the ground. Amazing!

Can't say what kind of hawk it is but it could be a young one that hasn't achieved adult coloration yet. Young hawks tend to be bolder than adults and that may be why you could get so close. He may also have been invading the redtail's territory and that's why they were so upset. Just a thought.

Thanks for the feedback. I was sitting at my kitchen table when I heard the birds call out and scatter in every direction. I was able to take pictures through my kitchen window of the hawk as he narrowed in on his prey. One of the cardinals hit the window and landed underneath the deck furniture.

Yes, young Cooper's. Cornell Website has a nice accipeter identification page. Cooper's exhibit the heaviest part of the body in the breast, sharp shinned has a lower center of gravity. We had a juvie Cooper's last year and he is still here this winter, along with a very large, very beautiful female who has included our property in her hunting area.
