What kind of owl?

For the past couple of months, and especially last night (New Year's eve), I've been hearing/heard a pair of owls hooting back and forth to each other consistently from dusk 'til dawn. The hoots are in a series of 4 to 6. On previous occasions I've heard only one owl calling, but usually only 4 hoots. One evening I sat out in the backyard listening and looking in the direction of the hoots. After listening and sitting in the backyard patiently, I heard some rustling up in the trees and caught a glimpse of it flying out of the tree. It was too dark out to get a good look, but it looked rather large (about the size of a red tailed hawk) and it was mostly brown in color. There were a couple of wing beats and mostly gliding, and then it was gone. :( What species of owl have I been hearing and what did I see that one night? I reside in the San Francisco Bay Area in South San Francisco, in close proximity to the San Bruno Mountains.

Lucky you!! Sound like a description of Great horned owls. They are non-migratory and are vocalizing to reestablish pair bonds and mate. They mate early - here in NJ they are on eggs in late January - February.

It's so thrilling to read the above post that what I've been hearing (and caught a glimpse of on that one lucky occasion) may be a Great Horned owl!!! It reminds me of my visit to Yellowstone Nat'l Park back in 2001, when I heard the howling of a pack of wolves where it sent chills up my spine. Not only was it chilling hearing them, but to actually witness them in Lamar Valley. I never imagined I'd ever be so lucky hearing the call of the wild in my own backyard, though -- that of a Great Horned owl! Now, everytime I hear the "Hoo-Hoo-Hoo, Hoo-Hoo", I have my eyes peeled in the direction of the sounds. So far, haven't been one of the fortunate to see them roosting in the trees. I would've thought that as large as Great Horned owls are, that they'd be much easier to spot than a Red Tailed hawk.

OK, Jean, I think it's time you 'fess up and tell us just WHICH ornithilogical publication you do professional photography for... Your photos ALWAYS look like they came right out of a book, or should be in one! I'm humbled by your skill and aspire to attain anything close to it with my own bird pictures! As for the Carolina wren, I got a picture of one just outside my dining room window a couple years ago, perched on one of those cage feeders... picture's through a dirty window, but it's an otherwise pretty clear picture of a wren and I think I posted it here before at one point, so let me go see if it's in my Photobucket... Well, I THOUGHT it was, but maybe I deleted it. It's late, and I'm not gonna hunt it down right now, but maybe you'll figure out if that was a Carolina wren or not by looking at online sources, FTM. Screech owls and barred owls are the easiest to call. I can do a barred owl well enough that they answer me, and sometimes fly in close to take a look. I learned it from a friend who was so good at it, you really couldn't tell the difference between her calls and the owls. Birders will on occasion use a recording of a screech owl call to bring in small birds. Birds will "mob" any screechie they thing is in their nesting territory, so they respond to the call by flying in like crazy to take a look around. This isn't really considered a good thing to do very often as it agitates the little birds, obviously. Once in awhile, it is helpful in seeing just what you might have living in a given area, though. I have been hearing barred owls at night for weeks now. Earlier in the season, I had two in my big oaks, calling at the top of their lungs one night, but I never could get the light on them to see them. Hello, I'm not sure what kind? I'm trying to get a good look at them without being struck again :0) Lol! I don't think they are super large it happens so fast the wingspan seems about 12-15 inches. They seem to be going between my neighbors pine and mine-so maybe I'll be able to get a picture? Thank you-I'll keep you posted. It's fascinating! ~Cat

Texas_Annie: When I lived in Southern California, half of my time gardening was spent dealing with gophers. People in the East have no idea what these little buggers can do! Once, a neighbor and I were growing giant pumpkins for a contest, and as they grew larger and larger, we would try and lift them off the ground a bit, to guess their weight. Ours were each about 150 pounds, or so, until one day when he lifted his pumpkin, it came right up off the ground. Gophers had tunneled in from beneath it, and eaten all its insides out--nothing but a shell remained. This, after 3 months of special care given the pumpkin. I'm sure he would have liked to wring the little critter's neck. They do make traps for gophers that are pretty effective. You open their run (when you see soil piled up) and put the trap in the run, then put a board over it. Lifting the board and checking it periodically should yield a squashed little plant-eater. If you continue doing this for the rest of your life, you'll probably keep the gophers under control.

You live near San Bruno Mountains, well there are a huge number of trees, especially on the north and the west side. I would bet there is more than one breeding pair of great horned owls in your area, you may keep an eye out for other raptors as well. I live in the North Bay and have driven the area you are near...

While I'm a gardener and looking downward at plants most of the time, my husband has been looking up, watching and listening to birds. No more than 50 ft. from our house is a great horned owl sitting on a nest of 2 babies high up in a Eucalyptus tree. They look right at us and the babies are fuzzy white and look almost like a persian cat. Their nest is full of white down. It's so amazing! We live near a creek in a woodsy area of So. Orange County. I have never seen so many birds (now that we are looking). Kites, hawks, kingfishers, crows, woodpeckers, bluebirds, robins and of course, hummingbirds.

What kind of owl did I see I do not konow, but what i do know is that it was brown with white spotes (on its back only) and it looked liked it had a white line mask. I have been looking all over the web and can not find my answer so can you help me at all I am clue less!!!!

hananbean - Where do you live? it helps us identify what are possible species for your area.

I live in SF also and have heard that same owl hoot I believe. One higher pitched hoot followed by three lower pitched hoots. I used to hear it in the Castro when I lived there, now I here the same hoots where I live now, in downtown SF Civic Center area. Maybe it's following me.. lol. Funny, my grandmother collected owls, had them all over the house, not real ones of course, but figurines, pillows, decorative plates, etc. I love them too, but have yet to actually see one in the city...

A dark eyed owl is often a Barred Owl, here in NJ.
The call sounds like, 'who cooks, who cooks for you'?
The Great Horned Owl has much deeper, more resonant hoots.
And, of course it has yellow eyes. They are both nesting,now.

What kind of owl?
