Comments (5)Cat_ky, I will probably do that eventually. I don't know how they'll look into this other than cutting into the ceiling below--unless they can see what they need to see by removing that gasket. I just did some measuring, and it actually looks like my shower straddles my laundry room and garage. The drain is probably right above a wall. I might try asking my neighbors via Nextdoor if their drains appear the same. The part that really concerns me is the top of the pipe and how it's raised above the gasket and the edges are rough--doesn't look like the water will all drain out properly and will instead sit on top of the o'ring....See MorePVC pipes through roof for hvac venting???
Comments (17)Ray, The question posed by the OP in this thread isn't about a condensate drain line; it's about the furnace exhaust vent piping. Here's an excerpt: "Contractor has a two white pvc pipes sticking out of roof - straight vertical pieces with 90 degree bend pieces on top. He said this is hvac venting and they will be painted. Does this sound right?" To supplement your own, limited expertise with condensing-type furnaces, you might have pointed the OP to the installation manual instructions for their particular furnace or you might have simply googled "why are plastic pipes used for venting condensing-type furnaces" and pointed them to more expert sources. Here's a small sampling: "The condensing furnace produces condensed exhaust gases that contain water and carbon dioxide, which together form carbonic acid that results in a corrosive condensate. Therefore, only special types of plastic are recommended by furnace manufacturers for venting(emphasis added) and condensate drainage in a condensing furnace." https://www.thespruce.com/vent-pipes-high-efficiency-condensing-furnaces-4119901#:~:text=Some%20high%2Defficiency%20furnaces%20also,resulting%20from%20the%20combustion%20process. "To avoid this problem, high efficiency furnace venting (emphasis added) requires the use of PVC pipes instead of metal pipes to remove the acidic condensate from your home. These PVC pipes are connected to the furnace and expelled outside. This high efficiency venting system (emphasis added) must be installed when you install the new furnace." https://askinglot.com/can-you-use-pvc-for-furnace-exhaust...See MoreAre PVC pipes bad?
Comments (5)I agree it's sort of late bringing this question up now. Did someone raise concern and now you are worried? The answer depends on your mindset: If you believe we have generally competent regulations, regulators and testing, and doubting them is a conspiracy theory, then no, it's not bad for you and you can find plenty of information online which backs it up. If you believe we have generally compromised regulators and testing and believing them is blind trust, then yes, it's bad for you and you can find plenty of information online which backs up that point of view. What it boils down to is that any pipe type will leach something into the water. For that matter, there are still towns in the USA which haven't eliminated all the lead piping in the municipal water system and they have lead leaching into the water. If it were me, I wouldn't worry about it. (Disclosure: my home has copper pipes.) Hit the biggies first, like, I hope no one in your family smokes. And relish that hot morning shower enabled by piped running water. Besides, if we went back to drawing our water from a stream, what would we use: a copper, galvanized or plastic pail?...See MorePKponder TX Z7B
