To amend, Or not to amend?

So this morning the thought came to me, that my tomatoes tend to always be in the same part of my yard year after year and they do just fine. In fact this year I was overwhelmed by all sorts of baby tomatoes popping up though out my yard. I wasn't sure what I should do with them but now they seem to be a bit irritating, they took over a few spots choking off some flowers.

My first thought had been, when should I rip all these out and what should I amend my soil with? (I don't have a compost pile very sadly. My living arrangements wont allow it) I figure maybe there are fall veggies I could plant over the tomatoes spot? But then again, they do fine each year and keep coming! Then I read this article, I liked it alot http://www.helpfulgardener.com/vegetable/2003/tomatoes.html

As I read some stuff and it mentioned that the cold will kill all the tomatoes so I thought maybe I should make a clone or two and keep it in the house to plant next year. What part do I clip and do I stick it in water for a while and then plant it? The other odd thing is Portland, Or, had a pretty cold winter last year but I still got all these babies!

* Amend or not? If for amending the soil,

* what can I plant over where the tomatoes were to amend the soil, if any?

* Should I clone branches and keep them in my house over winter, if so how?

* When should I remove the plants from the area?

Here is a link that might be useful: This is the http code above
