Red Eastern Squirrel?

I saw this little guy outside at my squirrel feeder. I see plenty of gray Eastern Squirrels, but this guy it new. He looks like an Eastern squirrel, but is red. I looked up Red Squirrel on google and all the pics are of squirrels with white bellies, but his is red. He looks like a baby, and there seem to be tufts growing from his ears, but I am not sure. Anyway, he sure is a cute little guy.

I am in Oregon by the way, if that helps.

I think you're experiencing the same thing I am - Fox squirrels. Take a look at the Wikipedia page I linked and you'll see what I mean. I wasn't aware of the different variations/colorations/species. I always thought Fox squirrels were the very red, tufted-ear or black large squirrels that were not in our area. Now I'm seeing what looks like rusty grey squirrels and after a little research it looks like they are actually Fox squirrels. Really not supposed to be in our area, but the animals have never paid attention to 'our' boundaries for them. :)

That looks like a Fox Squirrel, through and through. They have been introduced into Northern CA and OR. This website talks about them in Portland, OR - http://audubonportland.org/wcc/urban/squirrels

It also appears that the introduced Eastern Gray Squirrel has pushed out the Western Gray Squirrel in your area as well. Damn shame.

Excellent capture! Albino squirrels were considered sacred, and in some cases gods, by many American Indian Tribes. There has been several generations of albino squirrels living along a creek just north of here. I first spotted them in the early 1980's, and they were still spotted last Fall in the same area. Redtail Hawks are "impressively large" birds of prey ... eagles are ABSOLUTELY GINORMOUS birds of prey. Also, Golden and Bald Eagles have dark breasts, and your bird has a white breast. Best guess: Red Tailed hawk http://www.backyardbirdcam.com/gallery/hawk-red-tailed.htm

adding topsoil and compost because have erosion issue. hoping once i plant it will help with this issue as well. I could just leave as is, but the truck will just dump it right where i need it, don't need to haul it at all! American holly is definitely one i will add too. I saw some large ERC Emerald Sentinel and they have an amazing fragrance as well. I do worry cultivars are not as good for wildlife as the straight species, but berries look the same. I will probably mix both to be safe. Loving the winterberry idea as well. BTW, is it true that Norway spruce is considered "invasive", as in it is replacing too many native species in Zone 7? Don't know if what I find in the literature sometimes is true or not... I will post pictures once I get started. Lots of great advice here,thanks!!

Despite the common name, eastern red cedar IS a juniper.......Juniperus virginiana. The sample on the left is definitely a juniper. The one on the right could possibly be one as well (a different species) or perhaps a Thuja. Would need more details and full tree photos to attempt a specific ID.
