Probably not until February-March. You can get them most places then.

Let me pass along a hint that an elderly gardener gave me:
When you find the dogwood, (he was talking about in the woods, but I'd do this for a nursery as well) write on it which direction was North, then when you get it home plant it facing the same direction that it was growing in.
He gave me this advice because I had planted 12 dogwoods over a 2 year span and lost all but 3, even with water. I couldn't explain it, especially since they are native all up and down my road, but that was his explanation and it works for me.

We have them at The Plant Environment where I work. My daughter lives in Austin and I will be coming to Austin sometime in January, I would imagine. Ours are 6 - 8 ft tall. Well, the 5 gallons are. We also have 1 gallon size which are from 2 - 4 ft tall.

What I want to know is how did you get all those gardenia bushes to do so well? Certain soil, location, sun/no sun, pots, raised planter, amendments? Do tell!

Hi dallasbloom....I amended my soil, yes! I mixed alot of peat moss into my existing soil, but I lost 3-4 the first time around, then I bought and replanted more, and then lost 2-3 more. I didn't give up. The gardenias that "took" and got bigger, I laid their bigger branches down into the dirt and pinned them down with hooks made out of old metal coathangers and they rooted! I then cut these off the planted them and they are growing. I have 17 beautiful plants. They are on the east side of my house. They get full sun until noontime, when they get bright daylight the rest of the day. I give them anything that says "to make soil more acid" and give them iron sulfide? to make their leaves green and keep them from getting chlorotic. Also give each plant a couple handsful of super-phosphate for the blooms...do that in early spring and you will have beautiful white, fragrant blossoms all over your plants. They also like to be continuously moist. Good luck! I already see lots of little buds all over my happy amended plants.

and weathersby....I got Rainbow Gardens in San Antonio to order a couple of the white dogwoods for me and they are already in the ground or I would have done what you suggested about planting them north. I won't give up on having a couple of beautiful dogwoods in my garden. If they don't make it, I'll do as you suggested. Thanks to everyone for their great suggestions!
