Freeze tolerance of lettuce

We are expecting a freeze for the next few nights the lowest is expected to be 27F. Will my lettuce survive if I cover it? Do I need to cover it or should I just pull it all up and harvest it now? Or does lettuce handle short term freezes OK? I really don't want to harvest now but I would hate to lose it all. Sorry, I don't have a lot of experience with lettuce.

It freezes. Don't know about covering it. Pick some, cover some.

I cover it if it goes into the 20's and it seems to do fine. I grow it in containers on the deck and have taken them in a few times when we went into the teens last year but otherwise they stay outside. I've been to 29 this year already and didn't cover and they did fine.

Hi Bill I can only tell you from my experience about oleanders from Phoenix. It has to be on the list of very hardy plants, in the same league as lantanas. They have them in Phoenix, around the streets everywhere. They can take the heat, the cold, freezes and all. The flowers and the sap can produce an allergic reaction. I found out the bad way! And no, I can't remember any smell, either bad or good. They do come in pretty colors. Silvia

AGGHHH!! Did my lettuce/beets/sunflowers freeze?

Just checked this weekend (5/16) and you were both right. Beets and lettuce were fine-both sprouted and are under a 1/2 inch tall. Sunflowers sprouted but looked like they'd been eaten, not frozen. Corn looks like it disappeared. Thanks for the advice!

I gotta tell ya patti, I sat down at this computer last night around 10 p.m.,... shortly after the wife and I returned from Home Depot. We settled on the LG LFX25950TT (FD w/ice & water in door). We ended the evening at the kitchen table making the decision to return to HD in the morning to make the purchase in order to make the Friday delivery. She went to bed, I came here. It's now 4:30 a.m. and I'm still reading these threads. I'm not too sure we're gonna be there in the morning now. That's a shame, because the box looks so good AND it was priced really nice! But in the end, reliability is most important and your post just sealed it. Now I have to tell the wife we ain't finished shopping! Wish you luck on the LG!

Cold tolerance for hardy palms

Looks like Virginia Beach had 2 consecutive days below freezing, followed by 2 days with highs of 33 then 34, then followed by 2 more consecutive days below freezing from 2/15/15 through 2/20/15. The average temperature for this 6 day period was 23.25 F. So I would think that any palm that survived in Virginia Beach this year could survive at least 2 days below freezing and at least 6 days with an average temp of no less than a 23.25 F. I assume at least some cabbage palms survived.

Some of mine got bit the other night when we had that light freeze. I covered mine tonight and will leave it all covered 'til Saturday. I think it depends on what type ~ seems like the thicker-leaved varieties sailed through the freeze with no damage at all, but the thinner leaved types were damaged a little on the tallest edges.

Depends on the type. Some lettuce can take the cold but not the frost, or so I have been told. So I cover mine till I know more about it. I have had some go through the whole winter but I have had some get bit on the first frost. So di we leave you just as confused as you were before having the qquestioned answered.

Thanks for all of the info. I watered everything in real well and covered the lettuce with sheets. There were a few places that got a little nipped but all in all everything turned out OK and we got down to aroune 23F.
