I thought I'd just remind you guys down south of the only thing up here in the Panhandle between you and the north pole.

Gorgeous skies Richard! Is that sunrise or sunset? I think rise. I just came in from erecting a pvc teepee frame to hopefully allow my last in ground brugmansia to bloom. Another 2-3 days and it can go to sleep for winter âº.

"How sinister is using modern technology for attempting to increase food production by incorporating a weed killing chemical neutralizer..." I am not suggesting that the technology is sinister, but I can attest to the fact that some of these biotech corporations do have an agenda that is all about profit and stifling traditional agricultural practices that promote genetic diversity. If you look at Percy Schmeiser's case, you can see how far the legal arm of some of these corporations reach into the lives of traditional farmers, and how it threatens their way of doing business. Which is more important? The genetic diversity of food crops, or corporate profit? I think the corporate agenda is sometimes very sinister indeed, but that is not the technology itself, it is how the technology is being used. Back to the subject at hand: I cannot afford to allow patented biotech genes to find their way into my workspace, simply because I would be liable for damages if those genes were found to have migrated into my work. (again I cite Percy Schmeiser's case) This isn't about emotional responses to "franken-roses", (I didn't use that term, and wouldn't: I think it is a judgmental term bordering on the irrational) this is about safeguarding a traditional breeding program from a very real threat: all it would take is one Bee carrying pollen from a biotech rose to one of my seed parents and my work would be hopelessly contaminated and compromised. You can be sure I am not the only hybridizer having these thoughts.

Sounds like a great selection. I'd like to hear how BANNED IN BOSTON does for you. I've had it here a couple of years and it doesn't bloom here as expected. It has about 6 fans and I only recall last year it sending up 1 scape and the bloom count was very low. Hopefully this year it does better otherwise it has to go. I have BRILLIANT CIRCLE and it does fantastic here. Best of luck with all your plants. So exciting to get the packages and then get them all planted. Julia

When making an investment in an appliance, you must consider what your number one objective is. While Miele is a fine manufacturer (I own a few) their niche isn't range/cooktop/rangetop. A simple metaphor to use is; would you go to a steak house and expect excellent seafood? The answer usually is a resounding "NO". You would go to a restaurant that specializes in seafood. The old saying, "Do one thing and do it well" is the word here. When purchasing something as important as a cooking appliance, you want to try and stay away from manufacturer's that produce a myriad of products. When making a decision about a range/cooktop/rangetop there are many things to consider. First do you want a professional look or a professional result? This may seem like an odd question to ask yourself but it is paramount to making an informed decision. Many home "Chefs" are after one thing and that is appearance. If this is your goal, then any one of the manufacturers' you have mentioned will work just fine. However, if you are an above average cook or even a professionl Chef, then the only decision you have to make is which manufacturer "Performs" the best. For this purpose WOLF or BLUESTAR are the obvious and only choices. Wolf offers a high BTU of 16,000 with a 500BTU simmer. Bluestar offers an unpresidented 22,000BTU and an incredible 300BTU simmer. WOW!!! Any professional Chef would not be caught dead with a cooktop or rangetop with "Sealed Burners". While it is true that a sealed burner is easier to keep clean you will never obtain near professional results. The reason for this is that a sealed burner cannot truly get as hot as an open burner. The surface area the flame comes into contact with a pan also becomes compromised. It is a simple matter of physics. Bluestar does not offer sealed burners due to this fact. Wolf however does. Wolf began as the only commercial maufacturer that modified their range/cooktop/rangetop for home use but now they offer sealed burners which do not comply with any restaurant standards. Bluestar however is the ONLY commercial maufacturer to offer a 22,000 BTU burner for home use in an Open Burner for home use. A truly professional appliance. Period. So when all is said and done ask yourself which is most imporant....Professional Appearance or Professional Results? If you choose the later then the obvious choices are BLUESTAR and WOLF. My personal preference is BLUESTAR because it comes as close to professional results without stepping into a commercial kitchen. If what you are after is appearance then any number of ranges/cooktops/rangetops will do. You can also save yourself a lot of money if all you want is a "nice" looking appliance. Unfortunatley a lot of people who are remodeling their kitchens only dabble in cooking and do not really understand the importance of the specifications outlined above. They end up purchasing an expensive range/cooktop/rangetop merely for the status of a name and not to use it to it's full potential. They purchase for the wrong reason(s). This becomes evident when someone doesn't understand the importance of sealed burner versus open burner. I hope this helps you to ask yourself what do you really want out of your appliance and what kind of a cook you are. Only you have that answer, but hopefully you have been armed with enough facts about the features that will help you to make the best decision for you and your family. Warmest Regards

LOL, Adrienne2011 you can come over whenever you want to and see the cabinets in person, especially if you can help pick paint colors or put together chandeliers! ;) Seriously. Anyone want to put together chandeliers? Please? Anyone? ICFgreen we are doing stone all the way up our fireplace, the same stone that is on the outside of our house. It's real stone, not stone veneer. I don't have a pic, but I THINK they will be putting it on soon (I found out that was why these cabinets had to go in now, they needed them in before putting stone on) honorbiltkit I am going up to PA to see my cabinet maker on labor day weekend and I will ask him then. They are extremely busy right now and I don't want to ask him to type everything out for me about how the stain was done. If I get an answer as to exactly how the staining was done, I will definitely post it on here. I am about 99.9 percent sure they just used domestic USA-made no/low VOC 3/4 maple plywood for these cabinets like they are doing for all the others in our house. I'm not sure about the magic wand and incantations ;) When they made us our stain sample, Jason's dad just went in the back and mixed it up somehow and put it on wood. The whole thing took about 4 minutes and there was no bleaching or staining or anything involved, so I'd be surprised if they bleached here... beekeeperswife we are in Wernersville (made famous by being the home of Jon & Kate Plus 8, LOL) so a bit over an hour outside Philly. I am sure Dutch Wood will be willing to go to you (you're going to be outside Harrisburg right or am I totally off?) They are going to Brooklyn and Washington DC to do cabinets for people who found him off of GW. Needless to say, I would highly recommend them if you do a kitchen or need any type of cabinets for your new home. Thanks to everyone else again as well for looking and commenting :)

It really did light up in the west with the high clouds streaming in in front of the coldfront across the north and west sky.

Since moving to Texas, I have never seen sunsets quite like here.

It has already landed here in Austin. An hour ago it was 83. Now it is 62 and headed even further. I have a feeling my makeshift "squirrel" fence around my wildflower patch isn't going to make it through the night with these winds. But I've given up going out in the middle of the night rescuing things, in-out-in-out all winter. I'm daring my lemon tree to make it.

It was 28 degrees this morning. I've been enjoying the last of my zinnias and wondering how much longer they would last. Well, last night did them in.
I finally put the covers on the faucet's outside been taking a chance not doing it sooner.
Beautiful red sky. My views are not very good at my house so I always enjoy seeing your wide open spaces.

Thanks guys. Wide open spaces we have around here. ;)

And, I know we were kinda spoiled (70's earlier in the week) but we never got out of the 30's yesterday, some wind, and it felt COLD all day.

Good news is there is supposed to be a warm up for the weekend. I'll take it.

Such beautiful colors, RC, just too bad it has to get cold. Could you maybe run another strand of barbed wire to sort of, kind of cut the cold from coming on down here?

But on that "close the gate" suggestion, no can do there. Apparently we may have snow, 40 MPH wind and white out conditions by Tuesday. I'm planning on staying IN, so that gate ain't getting shut. ;)

I would be "staying in" as well, RC. I have a hard time with even these short spurts of cold weather.

We got close to freezing but didn't . I am 30 miles west of Austin high on the shingle hills. The neighbors down the road 4 miles got down to 25 but our thermometer said 35. I would think it was broken but all of my freeze tender plants are still charging.The Mex. sages, lionitas, nothing has been bitten. I guess because we are high up. The first couple of cold fronts are like that, It lulls me into complacency. I start getting these dilusional thoughts about being in a very special protected Zone, a bubble of missplaced warm air, my own hot air.

Well, we have verse 2 coming now. This one should drop the temps about 20 degrees in a couple of hours this afternoon and leave us with chill factors of 5 or 6 degrees most of the morning Monday morning.

After the last one warmed up just a bit, I took these photos... I don't think I'll be out there taking any Monday morning.

Thirty degree drop in temps in two hours since it was 62 at noon here. Now its 32 and the windchill is 16... and dropping.

RC, PLEASE keep it up there .... it is 76 here, and this is definitely my kind of weather. This is the arctic front that has my Seattle friend bemoaning the woes of winter. We are due to see it's results sometime after midnight tonight. I got my birdbaths cleaned out today, and am watering even as I type.
