Question about Peanut feeders

I was thinking about setting up a hanging whole peanut feeders. I have seen them at someone's house where some woodpecker was eating from it. It was a wire tube with no perch. I was wondering:

Can a blue jay feed from this feeder?

If a squirrel get access to the feeder, how quickly can they clean out the feeder (they would have to pull the peanut out one at a time and have no perch).

I feed suet in them. The squirrels have a really tough time getting the suet out, and mostly don't bother.
For peanuts, squirrels can remove small and shrivelly peanuts with ease, but nice plump ones (the size you buy for yourself) give them trouble so check the bag of peanuts you buy.
Bluejays don't have much luck though, but you could probably thread a sturdy stick through the holes if you want to accomodate them (I love bluejays).

I use a peanut wreath style feeder. I bought it with the hope of slowing down the BJs. They haven't tried too hard to figure it out, yet. The woodpeckers are the only ones that use it, which is fine with me. I put out whole corn kernels that the jays take. I also put out a hand full of whole peanuts every couple of days, which they take and cache as fast as they can. Basically the Jays are on a schedule, they come by every morning and check for peanuts. If there are no peanuts, they have a couple kernels of corn and move on. But I hear them every morning at about 7:45 looking around. If I cut off the easy food they may spend more time to figure out the wreath. Although, most of the time the woodpeckers, break them open in the wreath, rather than pull a whole peanut out. I'll probably move the wreath to a quiet location away from the other feeders so the woodpeckers can enjoy it more.All my feeders have squirrel baffles, so they dont bother them. I also feed our one squirrel and trying to get him on a schedule. The squirrel lives in a box I provided and defends the area from other squirrels.

Just some info about how I make the teacup feeders. I don't use them as birdfeeders but use the clear glass teacups and saucers and put a tealight in them for around the patio. Look very nice at night with the candle glowing. Anyhow we use 2 part clear epoxy to glue the cup to the saucer, then glue a copper end fitting to the bottom center of the saucer. The copper pipe then fits into the end fitting and isn't glued, just a friction fit. The pipe can be removed for winter storage. If the cup and saucer needs washing I can easily remove it. We've made and sold many dozens of these. They cost less than $2 each and sold for $8. Most of the cost was for the copper pipe. Only took a few minutes to make a bunch assembly-style so it wasn't bad profit. I've heard of people selling them for $25 but I think that would have to be in a really high-end shop. The ones I have for my garden use rebar cause the price of copper went way up a couple of years ago. I have a few but haven't put them out yet - I'll try to remember to post a pic later. I'm really busy trying to get on top of this gardening so not spending a lot of time on the net.

here anyway the chickadees head for the foothills and mountains in spring when it starts warming up and they mostly stay up where its cooler and where there are lakes and resevoirs unti the fall weather starts moveing them back down to the valleys. one reason chickadees find new feeders first is that they are very curious and friendly and don't fly away when you are out in the yard. some birds are attracted by colors also and many songbirds flock to flowers and bright colored feeders but also eat lots of insects that are around plants and flowers and gardens

That's essentially the recipe my mother used all the time. They're great. She always used shortening. Nice and crumbly. My sister mixes butter and shortening. I usually use the butter flavored shortening. Also she never added the salt. Peanut butter generally has enough salt and if you use salted butter, that too has salt in it but use if you like. A suggestion to speed things up, just grab a bunch of the dough and roll it in your hands into a log shape about 1"-1 1/2" or however big you want them, then break off the pieces and set in the pan. Take the fork and go at them. My mother's recipe said to dip the fork in flour but I usually touch the fork to the dough then dip it in sugar. As you're breaking off pieces, usually 2-3 in the pan and one in the mouth. Love that peanut butter cookie dough!

I've never seen a peanut wreath! That's so cool. Thanks for the link. I usually just put a handful out for the Blue jays & squirrels but that might make them last longer.

Are the squirrels living in your box red? I was curious since grey and fox squirrels do fight over food, but I don't recall that they are territorial.

He is Red and its a low squirrel denisty area, not alot of natural forage available. But it is territorial and defends it from the occassional intruder. Technically, I don't know if it is male or female.

Hmm.. Not a red squirrel but a fox squirrel. They are generally not territorial. I am guessing that it's aggressive because the area has limited resources.
