question about feeders and undergrowth from seeds

I added bird feeders to my yard this year.

I have a very small yard, and the only practical location for the feeders is under my garage overhang, where squirrels are unable to access. I've tried them on sheperds hooks next to my fence, but I'd rather avoid the bird droppings on my fence which requires weekly hosing down.

The problem is all the growth from the seeds dropping in my garden bed below the feeder - I've already lost a newly planted hosta because the seed growth took over. Is there any way to prevent this, other than to pull out the growth periodically?
