Hello, Got my lawn seeded the previous year; due to the amount of sun we get here and the not-so-well-chosen lawn type some of it has burnt. Which has left room for new weeds, which I am starting to see more of. Even worse, I have left some dead leaves clusters over the winter and the poor grass died :). So I would think I needed to cleanse those spots an reseed ? Anyway, biggest problem is that effin sparrows eat them all if I just spread the seeds where I see fit. So how is it done ? how do you people rejuvenate your lawn with all these hungry birds ? Thanks!

DANG you're good! *L* I guess these aren't really hard; I just love word puzzles and wordplay. I hope you folks enjoyed having a look at them. But it's confession time. I didn't grow up with these (Italian and french were my childhood languages), so it took some thinking to me to get them all. But either I've never HEARD of this proverb, or maybe I'm just being thickheaded (probably the latter): Observe yon ovine innocent When stripped of his integument! For him kind Providence ne'er fails To moderate hiemal gales. Let's se: an ovine innocent (lamb), stripped (shorn? sheared?), hemial means it has to do with winter. So the best I can do is "A shorm lamb means an easy winter." Am I close?

I have never understood about bring birds I don't want. I like all birds, big flocks of blackbirds can be a problem but even them I allow to eat for a time before sending them on. Which birds should I not like? Even the sparrows here travel in mixed groups of lark, chipping, song, english and others so if I want one type I will feed all.

If a hawk is 'coming after you' then you've ventured WAY too close to their nest and/or nest tree. Heed their warnings and steer clear of their nesting area. In a little less than 2 weeks the fledglings will have flown and the hawks won't care where you walk or where you go. I actually have a video of a hawk perched on one of our bird baths in our yard. I was 10-12 feet away from it and just arrived home when it flew into the yard hunting birds. It didn't care that I was there and tucked one foot and got comfortable. Hawks ONLY care about humans when they're nesting and have young that haven't fledged, and also when humans are attacking them or frightening them (putting them on defense). Hawklets fledge quickly, so give it time when this happens and make a wide berth away from their nest and nest tree. When hawks are 'dive bombing' you... they're protecting their young and see you as a predator... which you are. Plain and simple they know we're at the top of the food chain and are doing their parental duty and protecting their babies. Also, hawks aren't the only ones who do this. Bluejays, mockingbirds, crows (crows and mockingbirds learn faces, so if you harm, scare or challenge them, or kill one of their own... they will NOT EVER forget what you did, nor will they forget your face). There's a documentary you can watch to see the studies done and see video of how they recognize faces and their reactions. "All monsters are human." Not only a true statement but it's one all wildlife knows.
