Growing Tomatoes

Help! My Precious Yellow Blossom!

HELP! I was examining my last remaining healthy tomato plant and checking the yellow blossoms and accidentally knocked one off (it was a little dry and shriveled looking, so I barely touched it and it came off very easily). The entire bud didn't go---just the yellow petaled flower itself---and what remains is the green "bracket" (not sure what term you use for the green "fingers" that hold the blossom) and a tiny pale green ridged bump in the center. Is that the tomato or is it just part of the bud?

Thanks for any responses. I could just kick myself. I am positively lethal to tomato plants so far...

If the flower came off but not the whole bud, does that mean the tomato that would have formed there is doomed?

Blossoms that aren't pollinated normally drip off. Thrips will 'snip' off blossoms but you don't include your zone (you really need to do that) so I have no way of knowing if thrips are an issue where you live. I only see 1 blossom on the ground and definitely looks dead and wasn't pollinated so what you are seeing could easily be normal. Dave

Well, is too much water the only cause for the flowers to turn yellow/brown like that? Not the only thing but the most common things. Magnesium and nitrogen deficiency can also cause it. So can salt build up in the soil. I also used a bit of Bonnie's organic fert. A couple weeks ago. But we have had a lot of rain. "A bit" doesn't really tell us anything about how much you used and that isn't a commonly used fertilizer either so no idea what the nutrient/micronutrient content of it is. I can't find anything about it on their website. But there are signs of nutrient deficiency as well as excess watering so feeding the plants with something is definitely indicated. Organic granular fertilizers will only work if you have an active soil micro-herd in the soil to convert them to usable nutrients. So in a new garden, unless you have added large amounts of active soil bacteria and IF you only want to use organics, then well balanced liquid organic supplements will work better than granular. But they also need to be applied more frequently. Plus most organics are low N which under normal conditions is fine. But under excessively wet and stressed conditions, higher N fertilizers often work better. So I'd suggest a good feeding of all your plants. Dave

To catrin123: This is what you must do to save your Hoya: Take cuttings as many as you can, leave around 5 inc stem with at least 5 leaves to the mother plant. Each cuting should have at least 7 leaves, take off 2 lower leaves so that you can put that part in a clear cup of water, preferably sligh warm to the touch). The cup and the water should be clean. Place all cuttings you save in the cup ( if too crowded make more cups). Place the cups in a warm and pretty bright but not sunny area inside your house, a windowsill that receives good light but not direct sun. The cuttings WILL live in the water and root in it after one month! Could be earlier. Rinse the cup and Change water when the water looks cloudy. Keep the cuttings there until they roots profusely then pot them with soil ( never over pot a hoya, mix 3parts potting soil, 1 part perlite). Keep the plants indoor until the weather gets to 80-90 F then you can take them outdoor in the shade. GRADUALLY move to more light areas but not sunny until they receive dapple sunlight but never get direct sun. i believe the mother plant needs more light and less water. Remember Hoya dies quickly because of too much water not too little. please keep me updated

Oh good - my response was meant to make you chuckle. I was afraid that it came across as rather harsh.

Early in the season, I've been known to go through the garden pulling those dying blossoms off and then yelling "Look, I can grow tomatoes!"

Aw, you sound like a woman after my own heart... hahaha. Well the good news is that I see 4 tiny little suckers budding in its place on different branches, so I am just continuing to hope against hope that I get even one little tomato. I'd be so proud of that baby, I'd be liable to push it around in a stroller.

I just read in another post that you should feed your tomatoes weekly. I've done it a few times but definitely not weekly. I've used fish fertilizer and tomato tone. Thoughts?

I was using the 1/2 strength Fish Fert every Friday (so as not to ruin my neighbor's weekend). It was great up until the plants got some sort of wilt and blight. Now they're just hanging there all dried up, brown and crispy.

Hopefully, the tomatoes still hanging there will ripen. Can't say that it was a total disaster as I've managed to get 14 zip-lock bags of frozen toms so far.

Those "brackets" are sepals, the part you knocked off is the corolla and anthers, and probably the carpel got knocked off too, leaving you with the ridged green bud, aka "baby tomato". If it got pollinated it should grow, just wait and see...

catman, I don't know, but I could hug you! Is it really a baby tomato?! I hope it got pollinated. Oh please oh please. Can you pollinate them yourself with a tiny brush or something similar?

you dont need fish emulsion! if you are using a stroller then you could just stop and breast feed them.

I would probably start lactating at the sight of a tomato, true. I never thought breast feeding would come up in a tomato forum, but I appreciate an offbeat sense of humor ;)

I don't have fish emulsion anymore anyway... doesn't go far with my sprawling hill of flowers. Makes me wish I still kept an aquarium just so I could continue bottling my own emulsion---learned that trick from a pet store several years ago. Unfortunately my fish went to heaven last year so that's no longer a possibility. But seriously, if you know any friends or neighbors with fish... tell 'em to save you some scum next time they clean the tank!
