Salvia Seedling from Spring Swap

Can't remember who grew the Van Houtii seedlings? Gail?

I planted the one I got but then had to move it because when the Vitex blew over and I cut them down, it got completely overrun by the new suckers forming at the bottom of the vitex.

But here is it's first bloom. Not in great focus but you get the idea.

I guess if it's tender tonight might be the end of it.

Pretty little thing though!

Nope, wasn't me. Hope it hangs in there for ya, at least long enough to make some seeds.

Those leaves really look like a salvia gregii (or maybe even microphylla), not at all what pops up when I google salvia van houtii. Are you sure it's labeled correctly?

Yes, rain or shine! (We'll figure out how to accommodate anything Mother Nature throws at us.) I'll bring an umbrella, plastic sheeting/tarp and maybe old blankets to keep things from making the car floor too wet, and maybe an extra pair of shoes if it's really heavy rain... And rag towels to help keep the house from getting wet tracked inside...

Thank you everyone for coming. It was an experience with the rain, wasn't it? But, yes it was preferable to me to, over the heat and humidity that we've had last year and some other years as well. So much for trusting the weather forecasters to be correct when you need them to be. But, everything turned out well, even with the heavy rain, and we did have the carport to keep going under to get out of it. It was nice meeting you Suzanne, Silvia and Dan and Susan. I'm sure you will all take good care of those new seedlings and plant divisions. Susan, I'm glad you where able to get some of the plants in the ground. It rained here until about 3:30 and after that, the bugs where just horrible. Those foxgloves should bloom for your mother next year. I did get the house plants your brought me potted up today. Oh, Michelle, her husband and daughter did come around 1:30-2pm or so and was just thrilled with all the perennial plants. containers and pots to take home for next years charity plant sale for Children's Hospital. She said to tell everyone "thank you". Now if the ground will just dry up a little bit, and the rain stop for a few days, I can get the rest of my own plants, seedlings and those I got from the swap in the ground. Oh, and the weather really wasn't any better this morning either. It poured her this morning as well. Such is the life of a gardener, and we can't control the weather. At least we all know that we can have a successful swap, with lots of fun, good company and good food, even in the rain. Hope everyone has a wonderful summer, their new plants do well for them and we will plan on another swap here next spring. Love to hear from everyone as to how the plants do this summer. Fran

I dug up some double orange daylilies to bring. And I have something creepy that I don't know the name of, from around an old house. I should have a picture of its pink/lavender blooms, somewhere. I could also bring a bulb or two of a triple-headed, yellow daffodil. It's also naturalized.

There are quite a few of the Itohs that are yellow that have come down in price significantly in the last few years. I was told that Home Depot sometimes carries the bagged roots. I've seen posts on the Peony Forum in the past about people acquiring Bartzella and Garden Treasure that way. Also Costco carries them in some areas. Think the prices I saw on the forum were around $40 from both of those sources. Tagawa carries several Itohs but they're around $90 each. I think they're mainly sold blooming so you'll know what you're getting! Yumi is an absolutely gorgeous yellow that blooms prolifically and is one that Tagawa carries. Other nurseries carry them in CO, Tagawa is just the one that I've seen them at. That series is limited distribution locally, though. Bartzella is probably the most popular and commonly available yellow Itoh. It's amazing when seen as an established shrub. Getting P. Mlokosewitschii from Hillside is a very good source for a good price, just keep in mind these are grown from seed so could possibly end up blooming a different color. Molly sold blooming size that has a proven color is significantly more expensive. I have 2 seedlings that I got last year, they come in a 3-4 inch pot, probably around 6" long. Both came up this year but probably won't bloom for another 2-3 years. I think they came from Hillside. All of the species peonies that I've seen are very wet sensitive, need to be planted in a very well draining area and a bit shallower than lactifloras here in CO.

I agree, Lin, it doesn't look like the vanhouttei that I grew (and lost because I did not take cuttings). There is a perennial variety, but the blooms and leaves look like the annual and this does not look at all like the pics I have seen of it.

I grew the seedlings from seeds I got off of Carrie's Van Houtti.
I'm not sure we labeled them correctly, but I think that's the only salvia seeds I got. I loved the dark red color.
Mine didn't bloom. I actually didn't think it would grow true from seed, but hoped it would.

Mine bloomed burgundy and were lovely.............wish I had not been so neglectful and had taken cuttings. I was told they were perennial, but they were not.

Carrie, didn't you take cuttings for someone?
Maybe if they survived, you can get a cutting.
I don't ever see that salvia for sale at nurseries.

Anne took cuttings, Ruth, but none of them survived. I got the two I had from a very dear friend who lives near my little home town. They are perennial there, so she may have more she can share. I won't be going down there until the Spring, but I will check at that time. I have never seen them offered locally either.

I would love to have some of her plants, but her shipping charge is 1-8 plants ........$29.95. Too much for me.
I just received an order from Santa Rosa, also in California, for $7.99 flat rate.
Peppers Greenhouse shows to have it at a reasonable price.
I've never ordered from them so don't know about their shipping rates.

That is a bit steep for me as well............. I will look for other sources if my friend doesn't still have them. She has lost so much to gopher damage, not certain what she still has.

I love that Santa Rosa Gardens has that flat shipping rate. One of the problems with on-line vendors is that the shipping is so very high!

I ordered plants from Santa Rosa in their end-of-season sale, and the plants were very healthy. They were packaged very well too - my order came in two boxes for that $7.99 flat rate shipping. They are based in Florida, though, not California.

lucas, I forgot to say that the salvia is very pretty, even thou it didn't bloom true.
lin, thanks for pointing that out. I guess I thought it was in Santa Rosa CA. because of the name. I never actually looked at their address. My order was from the end of season sale also, which is still going on if anyone is interested.

Yes as far as I remember the parent is a hybrid, so it was kind of an experiment anyway.

Now to see if it's cold hardy..... ;-)
