It is a rustic winter wonderland at the Antique Rose Emporium in

San Antonio.

A whole herd of reindeer has arrived -- cedar bucks, does and fawn.

These guys do not eat the roses!

Rustic metal Christmas trees, in three different sizes, seen

here with smaller cedar bucks and armadillos (only in Texas)...

If you wish something different, we have horses, steers, goats,

roadrunners and more.

We have a nice selection of fall vegetables, colorful winter

annuals and tasty herbs from which to choose. We are carrying

bird seed and feeders for your all feathered friends.

Don't forget we have a great selection of gardening books,

outdoor furniture, and beautiful pots from all around the world.

We are open every day except major holidays....

We will be closed - Thursday, November 27th, 2008

for Thanksgiving.

In December we will close:

Wednesday, December 24th, Thursday, December 25th and then again

on Wednesday, December 31st and on January 1st, 2009.

Our normal hours of operation are:

Monday - Saturday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

I've only ordered from Chamblee's out of the two, and have nothing but good things to say about them--for multiple purchases (which is how I usually order), they're a good value, and their plants catch up pretty quickly to the roses I buy at nurseries/big box. ARE might be a good way to go if you only wanted to buy one or two, though--they have a neat website and lots of good stuff. I must say, your Icebergs look wonderful--not sure how you kept them that way in NJ, I'm in less-humid Nebraska, and mine were either blackspotty or naked of leaves, and I'm not consistent enough with spraying to overcome a bad tendency for disease. They were some of my first roses to meet Mr. Shovel, which I hated to do, because they are blooming fools.

Of all the antique roses I've grown none is better for cutting than Mrs. B. R. Cant. It's blooms are large and frequently occuring. To my nose it's very fragrant and it's among the healthiest roses out there in terms of disease resistance. The only downside is that the bush can get very large. I grow Natchitoches and dearly love it, but the blooms are small and not long lasting. Plus the color shown on ARE is not accurate. It's a light pink, blooms continually, its clusters of blooms are held high above the foliage, it's healthy, will take some shade, but for cutting ... no. Plus I don't get a fragrance. Of course, it's hard to beat Belinda's Dream for a big pink rose. If you don't have it, go with that one first. The size is more manageable. Here is a link that might be useful: Mrs. B. R. Lisa, I don't doubt that quite a bit of the fog is related you your illness, but I'll bet some of it is just normal. I find that if I try to hard to remember something, the neurons go on strike and refuse to fire, but if I can just relax and focus on something else for a bit, the neurons will sometimes put down their picket signs and go back to work somehow... I think a milk case/crate would be a good idea if you really want to get your babies planted. I'm assuming it isn't so hot yet that there will be heat stress + planting stress coming quickly after travel stress? I can't recall if you have hot summers, or fairly mild ones there... all the zone tells me is that your winters are not really winters... :>) Virginia

Kentucky - I have been trying to figure out how to make some raised beds- or raised pots for the front yard landscaping. I don't want the look of basic garden vegetable beds for around the front of the house though. I thought maybe I could dig 2 ft hole and put a 2 ft raised planter on top of it, that night work. I iam also thinking about making very big planters (they are ridiculously expensive to buy. I am not sure about the aestetic for my front landscaping, but after considering many materials and my craftsmanship capabilities I have a plan. I will just have to try it and see how it looks. It could sit above ground, part in ground or in ground. My design is 2"x2" wood frame cube (or taller) dark cedar stained (ECO friendly and plant safe). Side and bottom panels of 1" hardware cloth. Inner lining of natural burlap. It would sit on 8" concrete blocks (in ground) with the hole side up foradditional drainage. Inside bottom filled with river rocks then another lining of burlap to contain the soil and the plant and finally mulch on top, of course. It would have to be big enough to allow 3'x3' space for the roots to grow in the soil area. Again, the aestetic is the probelm (aside form all the hard work and digging). I think it wold look descent but odd. To build a retaining wall for the space under the front window of the house would not look right eiterh at the height I need it to be. I think the real solution is to pay for a backhoe to come in here and excavate the clay and then have new soil put in - way too expensive for me right now. I do have one narrow strip on the west side of the front yard that I am lining with concrete blocks to build up that soil area. I plan on very tall trellises lining that hill (all my land is hilly) and covering them with rose and jasmine vines as a privacy fence. The probelm is the area is part shade - never sunny and that is not goo for any of the plants I like. I bought the Charles Darrow Hybrid Musk for that location as it is reported by others to grow and bloom very well in shade. I also have some varieties of Jasmine that might do in that spot. I am also thinking of Camelias and Sky Pencil Holly. My Hollies are about 1ft tall now. It will be years before they grow big enough.

Hi Marlingardener and everybody! I thought about the advertisement part when I posted this, but both the Antique Rose Emporiums; the one in Brenham, and the one here in San Antonio, are such neat place to visit it's kind of nice to be reminded once in a while.

In fact, my friend Lesli, who I met on the Rose Forum years ago, came in town today and we went! I just posted some photos on the Gallery.

After ARE, we ate lunch in Bracken at a restaurant introduced to me by my friend Patty, Castro Gardener. Being only 25 minutes from Schumachers Country Gardens in New Braunfels, of course Lesli and I had to go there too.

Schumachers still has their sale on. The summer sale was supposed to be on until it rained so they must have had about as much rain there as I did at my house.

The four inch pots were still $1.00 and one gallon are $3.00. Other sizes are on sale too. Hard to beat those prices so we loaded up.

Hey Roselee,

Thank you for letting us know when your area nurseries are having sales. Sometimes I don't get the newsletter via email and it's just nice to have other shopping eyes and ears out there. And I love the ARE blog. Didn't know it was out there.

I've been wanting to hit Schumacher's lately but felt like it was too late in the year. Do you plant this late? Or do you baby them until spring. We've had cool weather since mid September! Very unusual in my neck of the woods. So, I've been a little hesitant to plant much for fear of losing to an early freeze.

Hi Tammy and everybody! At Schumachers I picked up quite a few 4 in. Blackfoot daisies and Copper Canyon daisies that I will probably baby till spring. If I get real energetic I'll put them in gal. pots. Of course the Blackfoots can take a freeze and not even lost all their leaves, but the roots may not be developed enough to do well through the winter if planted out. The other things that I got in one gal. pots I'll plant out -- the agaves, purple trailing lantana, etc.

They had a lot of other really nice plants in gal. sizes that could be planted out as well as the ones in five gal. or larger.

I always find something good at Schumachers. They may not have what they used to have, but they still have a lot!
