Do you have a safflower feeder?

I have a Nyjer feeder and would like to get another type for larger birds this winter. My non-native bird problem here is House Sparrows. I read that they don't like Safflower but is this true? Suet is also not supposed to attract them but they go through my parents' suet cakes in two days flat. It's pretty insane actually, there are sometimes up to 7 of them on one little square mesh container with others waiting nearby for their turn. I'd love to try the black oil sunflower seeds but that would just be a mess with them. If you know of anything else that House Sparrows don't care for please let me know too.

Odd that you bring this up.
I use Safflower Feeders and the HOSP do not go near the stuff but your YMMV. With Safflower I attract Cardinals, Titmouse, Chickadees and House Finches. I have heard others say that HOSP eat Safflower.
While the HOSP do not touch the safflower here, they do go after the Thistle Seed. I had to cut down the perches on my Nyjer feeders to 5/8" so they cannot perch on them.
Here are some other options:
There is a feeder called the Clingers Only Birdfeeder. Mine is red, but they also have yellow and green. I feed BOSS in this and have had great success.
Another option is a wire peanut feeder. I have never had a HOSP on one, but I do attract Woodpeckers, Titmouse, Chickadees, Nuthatches, etc.
I also feed suet in a log that has holes in it. It hangs from my Bird Station. Only clingers can use this, unlike the suet cage.

Thanks! I think I would be able to attract some interesting birds where I live and can't wait to see if I'm right!

Thankyou... I actually care for my neighbors home too...And because I don't always have the time like my yard, God these vines are every where. They are choking their bushes, crawling up their foundation, overtaking their grass, crawling up the fence, and now spreading into my gardens. If you pull up a baby, no roots come up..I will take a pic of them. They grow these weird looking bean pods and they tangle and choke everything they climb on. Now they are mixing in with my honeysuckel vines..ARG

I agree with that totally. There were definitely a lot of hummingbirds here before we put up feeders, every summer. It was because we were seeing so many, but never up close, that we got the feeders. No doubt they would be fine without them, but in trade for coming close enough for us to see them, I'm happy to maintain/fill the feeders. There are where I want to see hummingbirds, and for the first time this year, they are coming "inside" the porch to visit the tiny flowers on potted plants. They've always visited Coleus blooms out in the yard, but never on the front porch while I was sitting there. Wish I knew what they were saying when they stop in mid-air a few feet away, looking directly at me, chittering up a storm. I've also added a lot of Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender' to porch pots this summer, can't say enough about how much they like these flowers! My neighbor a few doors down has a large patch of Zinnias and at any particular moment, there's several flitting around that, sometimes a lot more. If any Lantanas are hardy where you are (or you are into buying them as annuals,) that's what has always attracted them around our yard, even years ago before I started getting rid of grass and adding any other plants.

Couldn't you find someone ~ perhaps a neighbor or a HS student, to tend to your feeder? I think if temp is not too hot, one replenishing should do it! If others around have feeders & garden blossoms they should be fine, IMHO. We are on similar zone ~ they'll be traveling back home in a few more weeks, you may have a few stopping by for a fill-ups! From what I read, they have a great memory for where great stops are, I'm sure they'll find their way again!

The magic halo concept is 95-100% effective for me for deterring house sparrows. The main idea is that you need the "halo" on top for preventing the HoSPs from descending from above, and the wires to prevent them from approaching laterally. The "halo" (aka top-cover) can be anything that will prevent passage. For my suet log, this is a piece of 1/4" density hardware cloth that is 2' x 4' laying over the top of support that the suet log hangs from. For my sunflower and safflower feeders, the top-covers are extra-large plastic weather domes by Aspects. I then surround the feeders with a network of weights suspended by 30 gauge to 26 gauge hobby wire. The nimble woodpeckers, nuthatch, chickadees, titmice, goldfinch, house finches, purple finches, and even some juncos fly right through. Harris' sparrow (indigenous) ground feeds with the juncos. The house sparrows and starlings find somewhere else to feed. The wires sometimes break of course, and if I don't get right on it and re-hang the wires then I will get a few house sparrows invading. I have a self-designed arbor constructed from steel support tubing with sections of cattle panel over the top which makes it very easy for me to hang feeders and wire anywhere I choose. If I get the occasional stubborn house sparrow I deploy a deluxe-repeating sparrow trap until I get the bugger. These measures have kept my feeders from getting mobbed by the pestilent sparrows and starlings and allowed me to continue to enjoy watching the birds at my feeders. There isn't much else interesting to see out there in the winter!

Last year I tried switching from sunflower to safflower for a few weeks in summer and the hosps mostly stayed away from it. However, I switched to safflower again this fall but this time the hosps(house sparrows) loved it. Recently, I've begun putting some sunflower seeds in the feeder and sprinkling some on the ground only in the morning and evening when cardinals are active and hosps are not. After 4pm I often see up to 11 cardinals feeding and zero hosps. If I fill the feeder in the middle of the day a mob of 20-30 hosps will quickly clean it out. In past years I just kept seeds in the feeder all the time, but this year the hosp population seems to have doubled and they've become a real pain.

We feed safflower, gave up sunflowers years ago mainly due to the mess of the hulls. No hulls from safflower, and the cardinals love it. We do get hosp's but not terribly many, and they'll be around no matter what I feed, I believe. Safflower sure is more expensive though!

The cardinals come in all day long, but we get most right before dusk, so we also refill in late afternoon.
