Cooper's Hawk at my window

I was just sitting at my computer where I can see out of one window and have a limited view of the kitchen window as well. Out of the corner of my eye I saw movement, glanced over, and saw a Cooper's Hawk on the pokeberry and rose a few feet way from the kitchen window. The camera was next to me so I grabbed it and got two shots before the hawk flew off. I don't think I've ever seen a hawk that close.

That explains why there were no small birds in view out of the computer window.

Oh my! That is a close up. I have never seen one come in that close before. I think it's cool that you happened to be there at the time to see and photograph it.

I have a friend who is very good with Hawk ID's. In reference to the Cooper's Hawks, she always says, "The eye never lies." So, I am assuming that the Cooper's eye is helpful with the ID. I have one here and it hunts in my yard around my bird feeders. As I was looking out the window at the plethora of Grackles (YUCK), Starlings (Double-YUCK), and Red Winged Blackbirds the other day, that hawk came swooping in fast and low, and grabbed himself a RWB for breakfast. Wow! I wish that it could have been one of the other birds, but I am always in AWE of the raptors. They are such majestic creatures. Unlike most people who feed songbirds, I truly don't mind the hawks snatching a meal when they can. I just hope they won't choose my BB's!

I live in the Tampa Bay Florida area and was lucky enough to have a pair of nesting Coopers Hawks on the grounds of the complex where I live. I was surprised to see that the juveniles remain around the nest until they are driven off as young adults. Like many young adult humans they do not like to leave the easy life at home. Hi Johanna, First of all thanks for letting the hawk go unharmed. Yes it is illegal to harm or kill them, but still not everybody would have acted in a way respectful of the law (and the animal!) in your situation. You did the best thing by securing the coop; the best way to avoid having one of your chicken grabbed through the wire by any predator would be to use 2 layers of fence, 12 inches appart or so. Where there is a chicken coop, there are Coopers, but also racoons and those are much more destructive than a bird of prey. Then if the Cooper has no access, it will understand in time and move on, checking in once in a while. These birds have a high metabolism and need to eat on a daily basis so he won't loose his time on a lost cause. If it becomes a real problem, you can call your state or your state falconry association to have a falconer come and legally trap the hawk for you. The bird will then be released unharmed in an area that can sustain it and where he won't disturb anyone. But with chickens, be ready to see predators once in a while. Good luck! Audrey

Another example of fortuitous good timing this morning - I went into the kitchen to get some more coffee this morning (camera had been left on the island) and saw this Cooper's Hawk on a birdfeeder hook.

It looked around a bit

and then decided "Gotta go"

and it was gone, leaving some ripples in the atmosphere.

They nest in the mature elms and maples on our street in front of our house. I feed my birds in my back yard where the hawks can't view them from the mature trees. A neighbor nearby set up a feeder in the middle of his yard, but soon noticed that the hawks would swoop in and make a meal out of them as they had a clear view from their nesting site. So he strategically moved his feeder location out of their view.

I've landscaped my back yard to give birds various shrubs and trees, including evergreens, for shelter and protection from predators.

When I see the Coopers Hawk (or chicken hawk as my neighbor calls them) exploring my back yard, I chase him away.

My yard is densely planted with shrubs and trees and ornamental grasses, etc., so the little birds have good protection. They're also very well fed so they can sprint out of hawk sight when warned.

It always startles me when I watch from the window and only a few birds are visible. Suddenly an alarm is sounded (crows? jays?) and multiple little birds erupt from the vegetation and disappear. I had no idea there were so many birds out there, and they could fly so fast.

I occasionally find a pile of feathers, mostly Mourning Doves who seem a bit foolhardy.
