is this a woodpecker...??

I saw a bird up in our pecan tree yesterday that I'd never seen here before ... could it be an acorn woodpecker? It was snowing so I couldn't get a pic of it as it darted in & out of the leaves/branches high up in the tree. It had a body a bit bigger than a sparrow, very short tail, white body with black spots/speckles, black back & wings & a 'touseled' red cap/crown. The sound it made was like a short "chip", "chip" ...

It only resembled somewhat the photo of the acorn woodpecker in the Stokes Field Guide/Western Region ... or 'red-naped sapsucker? The cap on the one I saw definitely was not smooth red but rather 'brushy'.

Sorry for my very limited & novice description ... maybe if I'm lucky I will get another look at this bird with more of a description! It did appear to be pecking at the bark of the pecan tree though the nuts are still on the tree yet also. Thanks for any ideas?!
