Swainson's thrush?

I think that's what this is. AKA olive-backed thrush. But.....why is it so rufous on its back? I've read there's a Russet-backed Swainson's thrush......but I don't think it should be here in Indiana. I think its on the west coast.
What do you think?

Great pictures of this Catharus. You captured all I need to ID this as a Hermit Thrush, as Tucker suggested. The contrast of a rufous tail and wing panels against otherwise grayish-brown upperparts is key.

kkbix, Nyssaman's list looks good. Maple-leaved viburnum and Spicebush are dominant understory shrubs in E. North America and will set fruit in shade. Add Silky dogwood along the edge. Two other shrubs for acid sites are blue-fruited huckleberry, Gaylussacia frondosa and Deerberry, Vaccinium stamineum however these are hard to find in the trade. Herbaceous plants for shade include ginseng and spikenard which both set berries for birds. The song of the wood thrush is like a clear flute. We start hearing it in mid-April. I have a lot of a Symphoricarpos that has violet berries. It's pretty but I have never seen a bird eating the berries. They just dry up and fall off. The best berry I have is a Silky Dogwood. I don't remember the scientific name right now. It has attractive, blue berries with a greenish overtone. The leaves turn red in the fall. The only drawback for me is that it's branches lean over and root where ever it touches the ground so we have to keep it trimmed back. But, it's worth every minute of the time we spend on it. So far, these are the birds I've seen eating the berries: Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Scarlet Tanager, Brown Thrasher, Catbird, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Tennessee Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, House Finch, Song Sparrow, Swainson's Thrush, Wood Thrush, Robin and probably some I'm not remembering. These shrubs grow along the creek and to think, we almost got rid of them all when we first moved here!! I am SO glad we didn't! VG

Thank you so much..with this weather, one makes photos whenever the rain stops! The rain suddenly cleared out Saturday afternoon and we were able to camp that night and go birding the next morning at the fish hatchery. Right after we returned it resumed raining and it's still drizzling today, but it was great to see the sun for a few hours at least on Mother's Day.

Not surprised about your cam-we've not had one single IR cam work, and even our trusty Non-typical Cuddeback flash cam went beserk, altho I suspect animal tampering. The same day my cam broke, a neighbor's dog went beserk barking at dawn, so he turned it loose. Jeff said he and his two sons saw a "black panther" stick its head around the barn, give the dog one swipe across the face, then walk off into the woods without a backward glance. He said it had a "3 foot tail." I was nervous about our dogs, but he said the cat only attacked in self-defense and didn't kill the dog tho he had to 2 take it 2 the vet for stitches. I kept reminding myself that jaguars don't attack people last night while we were sleeping in our screen tent with front flap open when I kept hearing it (?) bawling in the woods behind our house. It happened 5-6 times over two hours time-each time all the dogs in neighborhood would go beserk. Luckily, none of our dogs are loose. I'm still waiting to get my cam back. Since most of the birds spooked and avoided the new chair blind, even tho it was hidden in the brush, I'm going to try out a new bird blind prototype invention idea this a.m. that should make me "invisible" and draw birds to me at the same time.

Thanks Tucker and TMFF!

I'm not sure I've ever seen a Hermit thrush before......or maybe I was calling it something else.
I should have looked a little further in my bird book......as it says its reddish tail is its mark.

Its been hanging out in the gravel driveway outside my kitchen window. There are a couple of them. It keeps picking up things out of the drive......not sure what. It seems to stand still alot. Maybe its just thinking? :)

Hermit Thrushes are neat little things, I think. I absolutely love their spring song. Sounds like someone blowing through a flexible conduit pipe.

Hmmm.....makes me wonder if what I was hearing all summer was a hermit thrush. I was thinking it was a wood thrush. Are they pretty similar in song?
I got a recording of the one that sang in our front yard this summer, but I don't know how to transfer it so others can hear it.
Are they a bit smaller than other thrushes?

If you heard it all summer it was probably a Wood Thrush due to their normal summer ranges. They have a similar vocal quality (conduit pipe) to the Hermit Thrush but the Wood Thrush is more melodic. In Indiana, you'll probably only hear the Hermit Thrush on spring migration.

Thanks TMFF! Too bad the hermits aren't singing now, and I could i.d. it. I figured they were heading south and just passin' through. I'm glad they did though.
Saw several brown creepers today.
