Ogontz, It is definitely a Strelitzia nicolai, or white bird of paradise. You can tell that by the base of the plant where the leaves come out. You can trim it after it warms up in the spring, after any threat of frost in your area. You can also remove any babies so the plant has more room to spread out. Kathy, the buds are pink and open to pink flowers. Someday I'd like to have the white one that changes to pink and then crimson that you mentioned Janie. jyothi, I'm not sure where it might be available in San Antonio. You might call Rainbow Gardens and ask them if they will have it in the spring. Have any of you San Antonio folks seen it for sale? Just a bit far away. Do the leaves feel waxy? Is the foliage opposite or alternate? The pic makes me think Peperomia genus but I can't see much detail.
