Why am I having such a hard time id'ing sparrows??

Sparrow id's are driving me nuts!!!!! I have lots of sparrow type birds visiting my yard..and I don't think..or rather, am hoping they are not house sparrows. Are sparrow id's really difficult, or are house sparrow patterns and colorations so varied that it makes for a difficult id? I don't ever see what I would consider to be a typical male house sparrow, but I see many that may or may not be females. Would it be normal to see lots and lots of females and never any males? Do house sparrows always have some gray on them..or are they sometimes all brown? What about stripes on the head..not black stripes, but brown stripes alternating with tan stripes? Are there any sure-fire tricks for id'ing house sparrows? I am trying to be so careful to keep the HOSP's away..and I want to do everything I can to discourage them. I don't use junk bird food..I invest (and I sure hope my hubby never realizes how much I spend..lol!!) in BOSS, Safflower Seeds, Peanuts, Nyjer as well as Nuts and Berry cakes and mixes. Any tips and advice would surely be appreciated!!

Sorry for the rookie questions..I am still learning!
