Look who came for dinner

I keep four feeders on a tree next to my patio. The branch goes right past my kitchen window. I have a great view of birds at arms length. This Coopershawk surprised me. He hung out on a fence post for a little bit and then hid in the trees in the yard. I got rid of him by playing the call of an eagle from my bird id app on my iPhone. Hasn't been back.

Last one. A picture of a squirrel while the hawk was visiting. He ignored the squirrel. I am guessing that is because the hawk was still a juvenile.

Yes i did get bit by a Copper Head about two years ago working on some landscape lighting with my dog Adolf. Never heard of a dry pit viper bite, and doubt that a snake has that ability, at least not pit vipers. Certainly did not work that way for me or Adolf. Adolf got the worse of it taking a bite on his muzzle which caused a lot of swelling and blocking his airway. Anyway we are just fine. Cannot say the same for the snake. Last time I remember seeing that snake he was going in two different directions at the same time when Adolf bit him in half and slung the two pieces all over the yard. Funny part it was the second time I have been bitten by poisonous snake. First time I was 14 or 15 walking down a creek bank and stepped on it, an Cotton Mouth. That one put me in the hospital a couple of days. Thought I was going to loose my leg at the time.

Hi Bob, This bird has pale yellow eyes and he is brown with brown streaks on underparts this is how look young accipiters. Adult are blue-gray on upperparts and reddish on underparts with red eyes (Goshawk have pale gray underparts). Shap-shinned Hawk : -First : look at the streaking of the breast, coarse dense brown streaks, thin and droplet like on Cooper Hawk. -Second : see the well rounded head on picture 1. Cooper Hawk have an axe like head. -Third : look at the nice proportional size of the tail with the entire bird's body. A Cooper Hawk has a tail " too " long. -Fourth : this bird does not have the fierce look of a Cooper Hawk (the skull of a Cooper must be different above the eye to create this fierce look). When we see one we bring the feeders in, usually there is nothing there at night, which is when we usually see them...dusk and dawn. This fella decided to come for a treat during the day! He didn't frighten me but he startled my yard worker! I was in my office but heard the door open and "Lynn???? BEAR IN YARD!" This part of PA has drilling going on, in search of natural gas, there are two sites within a couple of miles of us, closer to the reservoir that sits below us. The bears and critters usually live near the reservoir or on the mountain on the other side of the valley. I think the drilling (and all the heavy equipment moving around) is what has made them move to our side. We had one out by the pool heater on Sunday, he was tagged and was wearing a monitor collar. The huge one that was here in spring also had a monitor collar on but I understand he was relocated. Our neighbor said he saw a small one run thru our top field a few weeks ago but we've not seen him. Combining the unused fields and woods on our property and two neighbors there are probably 100 acres of posted land so wildlife has the right of way around here.

Good-looking young Cooper's Hawk. Ignored the squirrel because Coops are bird eaters.

Although Cooper's Hawks are Accipiters and do prey primarily on birds, this species does capture mammalian prey more frequently than Sharp-shinned but less frequently than Northern Goshawk. Mammals found in the diet of Cooper's Hawks include rabbits, chipmunks, gray squirrels, deer mice, ground squirrels, and bats.

BN was kind enough to fill in the diet details for you. You'll, however, typically see backyard Cooper's shopping the feathered selection. I'd wager that fox squirrel was a bit out of range mass-wise for a Coop (or at its utmost upper limit), and Coops are so adept at snagging birds (which are a less-risky attempt for the hawk in the first place). Path of least resistance, hence the backyard bird feeder stalking in the first place.
