Planning for Winter - Share Your Advice?

We have had some success attracting the neighborhood birds this summer with our first attempts at making a habitat on our property.

What I am concerned about now is helping that to continue over the coming winter - I know that's when the birds really need feeding and shelter. We are in Zones5/6 here in eastern Massachusetts, where winter sometimes arrives suddenly and with a vengeance.

The thing is, I am having hip replacement surgery in early November, so I know that whatever I need to do for the birds I need to set up over the next month so my family can keep it going until I can maybe get around after Christmas.

I was wondering whether you all would share what you consider to be the most important things to have in place for your bird habitats for the winter. What has worked really well for you, (or what hasn't that you don't mind sharing).

I have gotten so many good ideas here previously, I was hoping I might presume upon you for more -

Thanks
