Novice trying to better target bird feeding

The desire to feed and attract birds to my yard has followed my gardening obsession that's developed over the past few years. I am in SE WI. My general plan of action has been to throw a few shepherds hooks out into the yard with whatever feed blend catches my eye while trailing through the pet store while I'm picking up dog food. I'm interested in finding out which birds to feed at what time of the year and what different types of food are good for which birds and what time of the year. I'd like to attract a couple different varieties that like to eat JBs. Mostly I see a lot of chickadees, some goldfinches, and robins. We had a pair of cardinals nested in the backyard. My feeders are filled with sunflower seeds or a songbird blend, a niger seed sock, and a year-round suet cage. Any recommendations for seasonal shifts in food types? (No nuts as my husband is very allergic) Suggestions for source materials (i.e. books or websites). Thanks!
