ID of birds

The other day these birds hit my yard....dozens of them. I do not recall ever having seen them before. I believe they might be "winter" Starlings. Sorry, I know the picture could be better. They had heavily speckled breasts. Can someone verify that they are "winter" Starlings? I live in a western Chicago suburb. Thanks, Barb

My bird book refers to this coloration as "winter" plumage. They do not have the heavily speckled breasts or the dark beaks in the summer. I have never seen them marked this way before. That is why I wasn't sure if they actually are Starlings! Thanks you for responding to my post. Barb

No. Not a deformed beak I don't think. We have tons of California Thrashers here (the bane of my fruit and fig trees!), and this didn't look like a Thrasher. Head was blackish, beak was much thicker and black, not brown. I have never seen this bird before, so I'm thinking it's a visitor, flying through. The bill looks like a Magpie's bill - thick, black, longer, and a curved slightly downward. But thank you all for trying. Anyone else care to venture a guess? Patty S. Looks like a wood warbler, maybe? There's way too many warblers for me to be able to differentiate between them all, especially the yellow ones! But at least you're able to narrow it down to a warbler! Pretty little thing, isn't it? Nicole

It's a robin. But the robins I have seem to be much more skittish than yours......they always fly out of the nest if I'm around.

LOL.......yeah, give me geese over pythons too. I think it all started when people were able to get them as "pets", and then they let them loose when they didn't want them anymore, or they accidentally got loose. They're a real problem now. I just heard the other day that they caught one in Florida (the everglades) that was 17' long and had something like 73 eggs in it. I've also heard that the native animals in the Everglades have really become almost endangered species, because the pythons are eating them all. I guess with this global world....traveling, trading, selling plants/animals/trees, etc., everyone's native habitat is being overwhelmed by these non-native things. We have 35 acres and it unfortunately has been taken over with invasive plants that are originally from other countries. Unfortunately, it was the Department of Natural Resources that sold the worst of them to the man we bought this place from. So.....I wish we could be more restrictive in what we're allowed to buy from other countries, as far as plant materials and animals. Ok......can someone please help me off my soap box? ;) I must say one nice thing.....I've started seeing a couple bald eagles around here occasionally. That's a good thing!
