I just saw a bird i never seen before. It was eating something in the lawn. It was the size of a dove and had a red spot on the head. It also has a very long beak. He was gone before i could take a picture. What could it be...

BN is correct, ..they should be coming here soon and will do allot of damage or kill trees. Here a male drinking sap after inflicting wounds/holes on one of several of my seedling Colorado spruce tree. Click on, [video] Put up audio all the way. Mom with offspring visiting one of several seedling birch tree. .. They eat the Oriole jelly, guess better then my trees! Since I planted hundreds of trees, it is a smorgasbord for them, wish they go to the neighbor,...not much to eat there.

Yah, must be. Just on the smaller side? It's closer to 4.5". My bird book says closer to 6", which is what got me. Pretty little guy. At least my kids got to look at him.

That is the webcam, Claire. Here's a recording of the bird call in question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BrtpkKZGCM&feature=youtu.be. (kudos to Raptor Resource Project for the webcam!) I've helped prairiefirewind with bird IDs in the past, but this song has me stumped. The call comes just after Mom Decorah's first squeeing, very near the beginning and ending at the 39 second mark. i live in the pinyon juniper and oak brush area, I get flickers through here in the spring and fall. Just north of here in the pines and spruce forest the flickers are thick in the summer. so i assume they are migrating to the mountains in hot weather and south of here in winter.
It's western Colorado so i get the red shafted flickers but i had a surprise the other day and had a yellow shafted flicker eating on the woodpecker block, I.ve been told that the red and western and the yellow are eastern usa.
