Started My Seeds Today

I can only do 2 for now. I started Brandywine OTV and Sungold.

I am going to start others soon for my friends who have more land to grow tomatoes. Going to start the following:

Brandywine Sudduth's Strain

Brandywine Landis

Yellow Platfoot Brandywine

Kellogg's Breakfast

Cherokee Purple

Virginia Sweets

Started Brandywine Landis today. I hope this ends up being good timing for my plants.

Yumtomatos, I think your pulling the trigger a little fast. In boynton beach I start seeds the first week in Sept. Start them outside and just watch for hard rains the first 3 weeks. You can start again in the middle of Dec. These are the dates that work best for me yr in and yr out.

As wgl58 said, planting in a cold frame varies depending upon region. Cold frames are much like small green houses. Don't let it get too hot in there otherwise you'll cook the plants. Not sure why you'd want to plant them in a cold frame, but each gardener has their own way. Regarding onions needing light to germinate - I do not believe this is the case. I've germinated many onion seeds - all sowed about 1/4 inch deep in trays - and they come up well. Now celery - on the other hand - absolutely must have light to germinate! I learned that last year when less than 10% of my celery sprouted that I actually covered with soil. After I began putting the celery right on top of the soil and allowing water to be pulled up from the bottom, I've had well over 70 - 80% germination rates. If you want to grow onions indoors, I used those trays with 72 cells in a tray that is about one foot wide by 2 feet long (maybe not that long). Each "plug" was about one inch square and maybe 1.5 - 2 inches deep. This year I just filled the trays with soil, planted the onions 3/4 to one inch apart, and in the past 13 days, 126 out of 200 have come up from year-old seed. Now - about cutting the tops of the onions. I've seen people do it - I've seen people not do it. Last year I was one of those that did cut the onions to about 2-3 inches long. I just update a thread "Setting out Broccoli, Kale, Cole crops" with the results of my cole crop experiment. My transplants survived down to 25F with protection. Last year, my broccoli transplants went down to 26F (two weeks after planting) and still grew like crazy later on. Overwintered broccoli will survive pretty low temperatures, but I've heard that new transplants are more tender. I'm covering mine up any time it drops to freezing. I planted mine at the same time that I planted my peas. My last frost date is April 15th, if that helps you judge the timing. One caveat - all my plants are heirlooms. I don't know if they are hardier than hybrids (or the reverse, for that matter). I know the De Cicco broccoli is supposed to be frost tender, but it made it for a while past the first frost last fall. It's an excellent broccoli, produced side shoots from early spring all the way until late fall. LOL I live in zone 8 and I still start them babies in the house. I may try my hand at doing a few seeds as Jan did this past year. That's how I do my pro.'s, just snap them babies off and plant them next to their mama's. I figure this will make the clumps bigger a lot faster. Jan, my daffs are up and blooming too. I have several beds that are full of paperwhites and the smell will knock you out it's so strong. Ed, I'm so glad you have some more of your seedlings coming up. If you need more space I'll grow some seedlings for you here....if you supply the seeds are small plants. I'll keep photos and records and anything else you would need are want. But I would want one start of each seedling for my own use in my flowerbeds. LOL Well I've got too many irons in the fire right now, I've got to go plant a few more crosses I just got off the L.A. I wish someone would breaker the curser on my computer so I couldn't get on there. Each day I say "I'm not going to buy any more seeds" Each day, I lie to myself and go ahead and click on SOMETHING ON THERE.....lol Berrytea4 me, I sure would like to have a couple of Blue Spruce seedlings to try to grow here. Even if it is too hot, I'd like to try. Do they come up wild there like our pine trees do here in the Piney Woods of East Texas? WE need some new pictures of everyone's seedlings. I don't know how to put them on here or I would. Please don't anyone offer to teach me how. I've tried before and I'm HOPELESS. Happy Gardening and lots of beautiful daylily babies this summer.

I'm way behind thanks to a hectic Summer full of classes and really hoping I don't fail miserably for the Fall planting because of it. I just started seeds for all of the following and since it's a first time for me and I'm running late on some, praying they work out. My neighbor starts his the first week in September like you do. He grows Better Boys. The reason I was starting a bit early is that the heirlooms seem to take longer to mature. And because I am impatient. I will start seeds again the first week in September and see if it makes a difference. I will just have to give the plants away but I should be able to find some takers.

Tom from Tampa (zone 9b) started his a month ago, but the crazy thing about Florida is that you can be only 120 miles north of here and the weather is a different zone and really quite a different climate when it comes to growing plants.

My first little seedling of the season. It is Sungold - germinated in 4 days. I soaked the seeds before I planted them.

Sam has a good saying. Plant em if you got em. I have a Reverend who has a saying similiar,"Smoke em if ya got em."

Same idea and I fully believe it. It is the whole purpose of the tomato itself. There are ALOT of seeds in tomatoes, and most do not fail to relive.

Well I have 5 Sungold seedlings now; they just popped up overnight. One is all the way to the side of the cell in which it was planted. Should I move it to the middle or just leave it be?

I am getting a pretty good germination rate - 6/6 SunGold, 6/6 Sudduth, 6/6 Platfoot, 5/6 OTV and 5/6 Landis. Is this typical for fresh seeds?

95-100% germination is normal.
