Broccoli

Is it O.K. to plant broccoli when I plant peas? I'm wondering if they are as frost tolerant? I usually plant peas around Apr. 20 here in central MN. Our last frost is typically around May 20. I start my broccoli indoors and plant out transplants, so I'm thinking of starting my broccoli seeds today.

In south Louisiana we plant broccoli in September. The plants will easily tolerate temperatures in the mid 20's. However, when we fall into the 20's, we usually remain below freezing for the less than 24 hrs. Although we rarely get to the upper teens, the broccoli plants would begin to show sings of being stressed at these low temperatures. I do vaugely recall one instance in the last 30 years where we dropped into the lower teens and that pretty much did the broccoli plants in. My guess is that a MI frost should not be an issue.

This exact problem with ants is happening with my broccoli in our fall garden. Thousands of them! What is the Solution?! I transplanted the first victim plant away from the ant colony and sprayed all the ants after stirring their mound of dirt which was full of white eggs! Now, the ants are attacking the transplant again along with a second broccoli plant, and both are seriously wilting. This time there is no visible ant mound. I only have one good broccoli plant left! When I jiggle the base of the infested stems, ants pour out of the dirt. They are NOT aphids and ZERO cutworms or cutworm damage has been observed.

I really wondered if I'd use this enough to justify the cost and I still wish that you could buy it in smaller quantities, but I love it so much I honestly think I'd have paid twice as much. I'm on a sugar and starch free diet, which means velveeta is a no-no. I've really been missing nacho sauce though, so this is the perfect solution. Using a good cheese makes this way better than velveeta ever dreamed of being, in fact. Here's my recipe for low carb spicy nacho sauce, as I had a hard time finding a good recipe that didn't require a food scale and maybe this will help someone else: 1/4 cup water or broth 1 tsp sodium citrate 1 diced tomato, about 1/3-1/2 cup 2 tablespoons chopped green chilies 2 chopped mild jalapenos (if using spicy you may want to remove seeds) 1/4 tsp onion powder 1/8 tsp garlic powder 6 ounces mild cheddar cheese- about two cups mix water and sodium citrate in a saucepan until dissolved then place over medium heat on stove top, bring to a simmer. Add vegetables and seasonings and cook in water for about five minutes until soft, then gradually add shredded cheese, stirring well to combine. The tomato adds water to the sauce. If you don't use the tomato you need to increase the water to 1/2 cup. The ratio that works for me is: 1/2 cup water, 1 tsp sodium citrate, and 6 ounces of cheese.

Does anyone grow Broccoli sprouts?

I don't fear salmonella because I use good seed from a reputable source and I do not use water that has been through the intestinal tracts of animals or in contact with the leavings of animals. I grow them clean, with clean materials and clean hands. Pretty much the same clean as when doing ferments or canning. There isn't any risk of salmonella when I grow sprouts. Commercial sprouts can be questionable IMO for a variety of reasons so I don't buy them. Microgreens can have a risk of salmonella if one is using contaminated seed or water. That's also often how mature commercial greens get salmonella, from contaminated water. Sprouts are fussier IMO since you need to rinse and reset them a couple times a day and microgreens need watering every day or two. Microgreens also safely hold longer on the grow than sprouts do. I don't really avoid growing sprouts. I just don't grow them often because we tend to like microgreens more.

I've experienced that with a number of brassicas over the years. Seems like a sort of wax produced by the plant that makes the leaves water repellent. It doesn't look like powdery mildew to me - and the plants look healthy, but the leaves aren't shaped like any broccoli I've grown - could they be cabbage or collards?

I found out this last fall and winter that well-developed plants can survive temps down to the upper teens for a short period of time. But I also discovered that young plants were stressed too much by those same cold temps and never got anywhere as close to as big as the ones that were already mature when the cold temps hit. They still produced, but not as much.

I planted some last fall and I just harvest my first. it was slightly leggy because it ended up in full shade, but it survived many a night into the low teens, though not for long. They're pretty tough.

I just update a thread "Setting out Broccoli, Kale, Cole crops" with the results of my cole crop experiment. My transplants survived down to 25F with protection. Last year, my broccoli transplants went down to 26F (two weeks after planting) and still grew like crazy later on. Overwintered broccoli will survive pretty low temperatures, but I've heard that new transplants are more tender. I'm covering mine up any time it drops to freezing. I planted mine at the same time that I planted my peas. My last frost date is April 15th, if that helps you judge the timing. One caveat - all my plants are heirlooms. I don't know if they are hardier than hybrids (or the reverse, for that matter). I know the De Cicco broccoli is supposed to be frost tender, but it made it for a while past the first frost last fall. It's an excellent broccoli, produced side shoots from early spring all the way until late fall.
