birds flying into windows

I posted last year about this and was told that the reflective decals work. I went out and bought some, put them up and they worked - for a while. Right now I have birds hitting the windows every day. It's mostly on the west and north sides of the house. The only birds that were killed was before I had the decals up, now its more like sideswiping, but I can still hear it happening. Is there anything else I can do?

i take photos out my windows that overlook the feeders and
needed something that would not block pictures too much.
I hung a wind chime on one side of the window and it has helped. on another window that there is no feeders i hung a couple curly ribbons that dangle down that helped also

I did read about the ribbons on another bird site and tried that. I put some up and the birds ignored them. Maybe that was because all I had at the time was white and that's what I put up. Maybe I should have gone with another color. The advice about the wind chimes got me to thinking. I have a wind chime inside the patio door. The glass in it is blue and when the sun hits it, it sparkles. Do you think that would attract the birds? Maybe I should move it. I never thought of that when I put it up. Guess I'll have to check and see if birds are attracted to certain colors. Thanks for the advice.

I get birds hitting windows, too. And some birds are worse than others - house sparrows, for example, never hit the windows, but I've picked up lots of dead Cedar Waxwings that hit windows on the house and the garage. Big birds, like crows, blue jays, small hawks, rarely hit but those little redpolls hit frequently. I think the best method to curb the window hits while still inviting birds is to have some branches in front of the window for them to swoop in and perch on - like maybe a few tall willow or dogwood branches firmly pushed in the ground below the window, or fashion a light twig trellis. Or grow a small tree in front of the window. One year I had tall castor bean plants growing in front of the window - awesome view of the birds pirched in the plants and no window hits.

Birds flying INSIDE of bird netting??

Some birds will find their way into the bird netting. Most will be deterred. At least, that has been my experience. I found a little bird (vireo?) caught up in the netting but was able to release him. Netting is a good way to go for small tree, but it's tough to wrap around a big tree. I still haven't tried "scare tape", and response to my queries have yielded mixed results. In sum, it seems to work while it works, but the birds seem to catch on. RB

Brain swelling is what I've been thinking. When I attempt to pull out it's wing, he tries flapping them and I still can't see anything. I have tried giving it water but will try again. Do you have any idea what I can give it to eat? I don't know what to do for him but if he's dying, I'd rather him die in the house where it is warm and safe, rather than dying outside in the elements. He doesn't seem to be in any type of distress, but who knows, I know nothings about injured birds. Thank you for trying to give me some guidance, he's so helpless and fragile, it just breaks my heart.

I'd imagine you can buy a hawk silhouette at your local wild bird center or other bird feed store. Perhaps even regular pet stores carry them. How well do they work, you many wonder? It turns out a host of bird species have an innate fear of hawks (not a "learned" fear). That of course means that this fear is genetic and has been selected for over time. This tidbit is taught in ethology (animal behavior) for us old biology majors. What does it mean for you? A bird that's never ever experienced a hawk before will still avoid the silhouette!

You could try putting a lamp with a low watt light bulb inside the windows that are a problem. Supposedly the light bulb will allow the birds to see inside and will break up the reflection.

I haven't tried this - I have the translucent decals on most of my windows and they work reasonably well.

Hang stuff outside the window.

Take paper and tape it in the middle of the window on the outside.
