All black 'ducks' at work today

We have a few ponds at work and I saw some birds in the water that were all black and I can't figure out what they were. I don't think they were actually ducks, and all of their heads were angled slightly up which I thought was really bizarre. I couldn't find any loons that were all black, or really any other water bird that was all black.

The American Coot does not look like it but I DID see it from afar. The beaks seemed narrower and pointier. Plus, it is only supposed to be in Illinois in the winter and it was a sizeable group. Plus, the Coot does not angle its head the same way. It was at least the same size as a Mallard duck. They were far but I didn't see any strickingly different colors on the bird. I am assuming there were both Males and Females but I couldn't pick out two different types in the group.

These are not unfamiliar to me, I think I have seen then before sometime in my life, but they don't seem to be super common, at least around where humans are.

Hoping this sounds familiar to someone.
