Another Day, Another Feeder

Hi folks,

Got back from a week on Cape Cod having seen some birds we had never seen (osprey,barn swallow). Got settled back home and filled the tube feeder.

Then turned to see our (brand new) upside down suet feeder on the other pole - with the entire bottom of it gone, and toothmarks all around one side. And the pole it hangs on a lot looser from our deck. No sign of the missing feeder bottom.

The animal that took away part of the feeder had to have been fairly heavy to have loosened that pole, it was attached pretty tightly to our deck. I'm thinking it was a raccoon. Could a squirrel have done something like this? I know how notorious squirrels are for wrecking things.

Any thoughts?

Probably a raccoon! But whatever it was, you'll have to get a baffle for the pole or the squirrels will soon find it anyway

Yes, raccoon or possum! Even though my suet cages close very tight, I've had them run off with the entire cage! I solved the problem by placing just a small amount of suet in the cage each morning, enough to last the entire day, then if there's any left, I remove it and refill the next morning. A little trouble, but those nocturnal critters don't come around any longer..as far as I know!

Depends on the seeds indoor- if they are hardy perennials or annuals you could start hardening off now. If they tender annuals wait till weather is firmly above freezing temps.

Wonderful! You sure are quick with your camera. And so lucky - it seems your birds trust you. :) I especially like the ones where the bluejay and the titmouse have a seed in the beak. And the song sparrow - there is something about a bird with his mouth open that moves me. ~JoAnn

Thanks everyone! I'm still loving this color and think Rockport is definitely my favorite of the grays I've done thus far. rmkitchen, I guess the Rockport looks lighter on the exterior? Chardie, I would love to see your stairs! caminnc, can't wait to see your dining room! Mush, that's the color combo I am going for. Cream sofa, tan drapes. I want to add a bit more turquoise and a splash of orange with pillows and accessories. Maybe next month! catkin, I'll try to post some tomorrow. We've been out of town and I'm on the wrong computer. @Larsi... It's not weird. I was completely as shocked as you, when I found a single box STILL in stock, in a back corner of Amazon ;) I must have went through 12 pages, before I found it. So Amazing, and Cool to be able to find stuff like that. I mean... It's Amazon. Things don't last long on there ;) It's just pure luck I guess. So happy :-) I'm glad you love the All Pods. I know it seems strange, but... their really powerful little pacs, and they smell amazing, like REAL detergent, lol. I just wish P&G would take a note from a competitor... instead of all these new scents and liquids.

Yes, I've ordered a cylinder baffle (already have a dome baffle up, I'm going to put the cylinder baffle below the dome baffle and hope that does it.)

Also, I think I won't put suet out for awhile, just to discourage any raccoon/possum thoughts that there will be suet handouts available. We haven't been bothered by raccoons for a few years now and we've liked it that way!
