Mosquitoes

I live just outside Columbia, SC and every summer we have a problem with mosquitoes. I did some research and saw that if we plant the following it would help deter mosquitoes: catnip, marigolds, citronella grass and rosemary. Please let me know if anyone has heard of this or if this would work. I would rather plant these plants than spray my yard as I have dogs and need to keep the mosquitoes off of them.

I've heard of it. It's wishful thinking. It won't work.

Yes, I've see that stuff all over Pinterest, too. It doesn't work.

Most mosquitoes are active in the early morning and in the evening - keep the dogs in a screened porch or inside during those times.

Check your yard carefully for standing water - it only takes a week for a small puddle to produce dozens of mosquitoes.

They spend the day resting on low bushes or in tall grass: keep the area around your house clear of brush and weeds.

Ah, bullrush! Thanks! Last year we had the worst infestation of gnats in the house. It was horrible! We tried all sorts of sprays, fly papers, pouring bleach down the drain, getting rid of all produce unless refrigerated, blah. Finally, I got some small decorateve jam jars (from the canning section at Walmart) and put in a bit of apple cider vinegar. I popped a few small holes into the lids and set them about the house. The gnats would climb into the holes to get the vinegar and get trapped in there and drown. After a week, they were down by half. After 2 weeks, not a single live gnat could be found. :-D

Mosquitos grow in water. Fruit flies grow in trash. If you take away the food source (garbage/old fruit), they will be gone soon. They don't live very long and you won't get a fresh batch without the food. [Young mosquitos are wiggly wormy things that must be in water. They're like butterflies: most of their life they are caterpillars (this stage is underwater in mosquitos), then they go through a chrysalis stage (also underwater in mosquitos), and they only fly when they are full grown adults.]

I just adore how those products gleefully list all of the many pests that they control….but don’t add all of the non-target arthropods that are killed, too. Say goodby to bees, ladybugs, butterflies, bees, and beneficial predatory insects. OOPS, Martin , are you the Martin who answers questions on that site? Sorry, gotta flag spammers.

We have some of the thermacells, and I think they work. Strangely, for the last 2 or 3 years, mosquitoes haven't been biting me. ::shrug:: Sometimes one or two will land on me, but they don't bite. I am not complaining. Hubs, they flock to him. When the grandkids are going to be here, I mix up a concoction of equal parts beer, lysol mouthwash & epsom salt, put it in the hose sprayer and spray the yard, bushes & side of the house. (excluding windows) I know it sounds nuts, but it keeps them away, and doesn't kill the lightening bugs. (Hubs says it's because the mosquitoes have clean breath, relaxed muscles & are drunk.)

Here in Old Orchard Beach Maine we have a ball park near a small pond and the mosquitoes are a real problem. We need to control this some how as our spectators are getting eaten alive. Does anybody have any ideas? WE need HELP!

Ask the health department if there are mosquito-eating fish they can put in the pond.

Don't just blame the pond: check the entire park for boggy spots and standing water.

I'd suggest applying the appropriate amount of BtI to kill control the larvae as well as introducing aerifyers.
