One possibility is Reemay. It is very light and doesn't catch on everything the way netting tends to. It also holds a little heat - nice in the Northeast at this time of year. As for storage - I put mine in a crisper drawer.

It's funny that you connect your change in lantanas with the change in butterfly frequency, WritersBlock. I have two planter boxes with four varieties of lantanas in them. But until recently there was just a single lavender trailing lantana in each box. When it was just that plant, I had butterflies visiting each day, alighting on the flowers, feeding, and fluttering off. Then I planted the other three varieties, one is a white trailing lantana and the other two are, unfortuntely, yellow and orange hybrids of camara (and are about to be pulled... research BEFORE you buy). Since planting the three new types, I have had much fewer fluttering visitors. Maybe it's just coincidence and I planted at the exact time there was a change of butterfly season, but it was like a light switch. One day, lots of visitors, the next, not so many. Hopefully after I remove the camara hybrids and have just the white and lavender trailing lantanas, my fluttering friends will return, I know my daughter definitely misses chasing after them. ((Note: I am removing the camara hybrids because I am striving for a Florida-Friendly landscape and I have read numerous reports that camara is, mildly, invasive.))

My neighbor sounds very similar to your neighbor Jeri. Not the most pleasant person to interact with. I try to imagine that she has something really overwhelming happening in her life to make her act like that. It helps me tolerate her and shrug her off. Ingrid it's really funny that you're feeding your neighborhood squirrels and rabbits and here I am trying to put spikes up to drive them out. I really think that if I can just get them to take a detour away from the fence line (AKA squirrel freeway), the neighbor dogs will be less obnoxious... at least in that corner, which is along our shared fence line. I'm going to try the spikes on the top of the fence and see how it works. I've built several bird feeders to deter bully birds. One worked with 1-1/4 inch openings, but house sparrows have found it and are monopolizing it. II want to preserve food for junco snowbirds that I've had every winter, but sparrows will likely prevent them now that they found the feeder this year. I'm testing a prototype built with chicken wire, and it does deter the sparrows, but will my beloved juncos still be able to get through the 1" openings? Testing this prototype. Bully birds and house sparrows have given up. Top will be a chicken wire cut to fit if juncos are successful in getting through. Chicken wire top, 1-1/4 inch openings on every side.
