Growing Tomatoes

eating toms from plants that arent healthy?

I have this one brandywine that is starting to look a bit unealthy. Not really sure why, but the fruit still looks ok. Im not really sure what the problem is, it just started looking wilty and stuff about a week ago. 2 of the toms are starting to ripen and look yummy, can I still eat these? will we get sick?

Yes, assuming the fruit itself shows no signs of damage or disease and that you wash your produce well before eating, you can eat them with no fear. Go ahead and pick them now and let them finish ripening on the kitchen counter.

You would be quite surprised to see the condition of some plants whose fruit you purchase at the grocery store so enjoy your tomatoes. ;)

I've had a few Brandywines and have only got 3-5 fruit per YEAR!
The plants look like cr**, but the maters taste great!
I had a pear type mater die off this year for no real reason. There were some maters, but I didn't enjoy them or eat them.
Sometimes my mater plants kinda die off in late Sept or Oct, but I'm still getting fruit!
I don't eat stuff with big ole holes, but I do cut around those holes in order to eat those delicious maters!

Thanks for that link, mtn, although I wasn't surprised at the two lists and mostly already follow that guideline for what I buy organic. Years ago I read an article by someone who had visited a strawberry farm and was aghast at the protective suits the farmers wore due to the pesticides they were using. Ever since then I've made sure never to buy berries that aren't organic but it's not always easy to find them here. Whole Foods is hit or miss - some days they have them, some not. Even most of the local,produce stands aren't organic! I want to support my local growers but often can't. We had a great butcher that carried grass fed meats but sadly he closed. I think his high prices prevented him from getting the number of customers necessary to stay open. The area I need most improvement is our meats, eggs and dairy. I don't buy processed foods (rarely ever even go to the regular grocery store), and do well with produce, it's being able to find reasonably priced "healthy" meats, poultry and fish that kills me. Funny conversation at the dinner table last night. Somehow we started talking about tv dinners that were so popular in the 70s. Dh and I were trying to describe them to the kids when one of my kids chimed in, "so kinda like lunchables for adults?". Lol - exactly! Years ago my kids would ask why I never bought lunchables, and of course I explained why. Then one of my kids had the chance to taste one while at a friend's house and said it was awful and was thankful for my homemade lunches!

i would definitely get an A, but take into consideration I am a dietitian and am currently in treatment for colon cancer.... it would make sense... I agree red meat needs to be eaten in moderation. Memorial Sloan kettering has done the studies and says 18 ounces a week should be the limit otherwise you are putting yourself at high risk for a myriad of cancers particularly colon, not to mention heart disease etc.. It is actually the heme iron in the red meat that is the culprit. Although everyone does need iron, iron can also be bad for us especially if we are fighting cancer. In my case i believe stress caused my disease, and not my diet, but even though i have always eaten pretty healthy, now my whole family is on the bandwagon and we eat super healthy. When i grill we make sure to marinade everything, and eat a vit c source to negate any carcinogens. We don't eat any deli meats or products with nitrites/nitrates in them (carcinogens) We eat red meat no more than twice a week-otherwise it is chicken, turkey, or a meatless meal like whole wheat spaghetti or egg white omelettes. We have 2 veg at very meal and a large fruit bowl out at each meal as well. WE eat ALOT of berries. I have never liked whole wheat bread in the past but i have found sara lee's classic whole wheat to be wonderfully soft and even my kids love it.. We limit dairy to 2 cups of milk a day, and carbs to no more than 3-4 a meal (for insulin control).. We do splurge sometimes... when we go out to eat which is only like every other week we eat whatever we want, and i allow my kids one "good" snack a day like ice cream or a brownie or potato chips or whatever.. You have to have some fat...and some sugar because i feel you have to enjoy life too...

I suspect the plant that's losing all of it's upper leaves is getting nailed by hornworms. If you identify, pick not flowering due to and dispose of any you can find and then spray with Bt K variant(known as Caterpillar Killer, Dipel, Thuricide). The hab next to it might not be producing for a number of reasons--- how much sun is it getting and is there good air circulation? The reaper in the pot -- since it's in the same spot and conditions as the "productive" Bhut next to it, I suspect it's just a laggard. When I grew reapers, I noticed they were incredibly late. Even slower than the already slow Bhuts. Pics help. Kevin

Thank you, @Jilly. There are several planned developments with ornamental grass along the streets. I need to find out what variety it is because I would like some on the front yard. Maybe the purple would be okay in the ground. I did meet a better salesperson at the garden shop last trip, so I will look for him again. Our biggest project for the house has been a carport addition over the guest parking area. I showed two photos to the framer and said "make it look like it's always been here." Then he sent me a CAD drawing and BAM! Carport! Has a storage room (because the dang garage is small and we are not going to park outside) and room for DH's smancy street legal vehicle and a guest. DD2 was happy not to park in the sun when they were here for Thanksgiving. We also took down the the signs the previous owners left on the directional pole, cut replacements for the ones they took and then I painted and personalized - all 16 of them. Currently making two more DH wanted to add. Kaya, those petunias are crazy beautiful!

Ugly fruits are fine to eat... I routinely cut off seams and cracks.

I used a couple that had splits in them from the rain but I got to them before and bugs so I used them for salads cutting around the split part. It's hard to throw away a tomoto that looks otherwise fine except for a few blemishes.

It makes me wonder just how many tomatoes are simply tossed by commercial growers because they're not pretty and wouldn't show well in the store.

commercial growers dont waste tomatoes. they turn them into juice or sauce.

This unhealthy plant has been giving up delicious Aunt Ruby's German Greens for the last couple of weeks

I picked this Brandywine today-

From this plant and it was delicious. It actually looks worse in person-

But this one is the worst case scenario. It is the most unhealthy plant that I have and it's been giving up tasty Green Zebras and in fact I won 3rd place in our county fair last week for green tomatos with fruit from this plant.

So I would say unless there's mold growing all over the plant and fruit, to go ahead and eat them.
