This is the first year we've ever put out a humming bird feeder. This last week they've been going crazy! It's a feeding frenzy (lol)

Beautiful picture! Those hummingbirds always make me smile.

This is the first year we have put up a feeder too, and yesterday I saw more use of it than I have all summer.

My MIL's DH saw one yesterday at my feeders, but I haven't stood there long enough to see one yet. Some thoughts: While some like to boil, I don't, and my hummers don't seem to care. I make a 2 qt pitcher at a time, and use 2C sugar, 2C hot tap water (stir well), then add another 6C of cold water, and can use immediately. The rest is refrigerated. I fill 4 feeders, and recently saw an open "plate" design feeder video online that was simply amazing. Someone on one of these boards posted it. Might be in the New England board. I'm considering making one. Apparently they'll all play nice if they're forced to eat from the same big bowl.

I just managed to get some more close ups pics of her ( have added them to my blog http://mywisconsingarden.blogspot.com/) . I am so excited this is the first time I have had a hummingbird in the garden, and coming from the UK the first time I have seen them. I could sit and watch them all day, but it is a little hot out at the moment!

Hi roo! There are lots of different kinds of hummingbird, hawk or sphinx moths, as they are also called. Check out this site and scroll about half way down to the 'Pacific Green Sphinx, Arctonotus lucidus.' It looks pretty much lime green and orange in the picture and what a beauty! All the hummingbird moths add such a mysterious beauty to the evening garden. I just love them! If that's not it you'll find a picture of the one you saw if you look around at some butterfly and moth sites, or maybe someone on here can give you a better idea. Clematis are both a nectar and a pollen source but some are much better at producing these bee and bird enticing substances than others. Species clematis and those with nodding or bell shaped flowers seem to be far more appealing than most hybrids or those with open, flat flowers. In my garden hummers are attracted to C. texensis, cirrhosa and triternata 'Rubromarginata'. But in my much larger previous garden (with a much bigger collection of clems) they visited armandii, the macropetallas and alpinas, SAC (C. terniflora) and tangutica. I've seen bees on all my clems........they don't seem to be as picky as the hummers :-)
