could this be a curved bill thresher?

For a few years now I occasionally see a grey bird either on the ground under some bushes or up in the grape vines eating the grapes. It appears all grey, body size of a big sparrow but with a longer tail & a long,thin, slightly curved at the end bill. Could this be a thresher? Couldn't find any photo in my bird books that looked exactly like this bird.

Hi,

Is there any chance your bird could be a catbird - all gray (except for black "toupee" on top of head), loves fruit and jellies, long tail often at an angle.

Just a thought -

Hi again,

Just checked the Audubon Field Guide and it seems much more likely that the bird in question is what you think it is (curve billed thrasher), according to its usual range (the Southwest) and its habit of nesting in thick shrubs and foraging for bugs on the ground.

Sorry I was too quick to say - and good luck figuring this out!

Some other ideas: Cut the curves from an already curvy branch (this will be stronger), cut the curves from a larger piece of wood (say ply). Steam bending. Steam bending is the traditional way for load bearing beams, but that was before the invention of power tools and cross linking PVA glue. You won't be able to get a good curve using only the columns (and you'll have trouble with them moving under the force). Better to make a curved former out of ply or MDF and use lots of clamps (like 1 every foot). There will be a lot of force applied for the first few laminates, so you'll need the former to be very strong. A good idea is to cut the shape in thick board then drill 1inch holes every foot to put your clamp in. I'm surprised that you can bend 1 inch wood, but my US friends tell me that your hardwood is lot less stiff than here, so it might work.

It took me about 4 hours to cut the bird and the field tiles above. That was just a sample board. I had one of a duck landing on water that I hadn't quite finished yet, and had the piece sitting on the gunwhale of my boat in the garage, and before I could finish it, I walked by and knocked it off. To say the least, I was pissed as hell. That's the only one I've broken, though. I joined curves on Oct.5th 2007. The owner was my trainer. She was on her cordless phone most of the time while she was training me. She didn't tell me we needed to do the machines twice and on the second time around I was hurt by the pads on the squat machine. I felt some pain at the time but it wasn't to bad until the next day. I went back to curves the next day and showed a staff member my shoulder. My shoulder was all marked up from that machine. I asked her if this was normal and she said no its not and asked me who was my trainer. I worked out for the next few months and my shoulder was getting worse and worse. I told the staff this and I was told I should continue to work out but not to use the machine I was hurt on. I did that and my pain continued. I saw my doctor and was sent to PT and a MRI was done. My shoulder had a completely torn rotator cuff. My surgery was June 11,2008. I'm still in pain and going to PT. Have I lost weight after all my months of training at curves.Yes, I lost about 20 lbs because I couldn't eat while I was taking all those pain pills for months. I have filed a lawsuit against curves and will know more at the end of Nov. Training should be done slowly and by staff that's not busy answering the phone. I was also charge another $50 to cancel my contract. Wasn't to happy with that since I was hurt on one of their machine. My doctors note asked that curves refund my money. The owner laughed at that and said we don't refund money.

One of the lower priced fabricators I talked to had a flat price per finshed square foot, however you could only choose from 8 or so granites, from three edges, you could not have any curved edges, and they would place the seams to avoid any inside corners. Given what I wanted (pictured below) that was a non-starter. The fabricator I went with didn't have a problem with doing the curved end, but said that the CNC machine he was expecting to be delivered was delayed two weeks, so he and his crew did the curve and the inside corners by hand. So I can certainly see where for one fabricator curved edges can be a major additional amount of hand work necessitating an upcharge, whereas for others with more advanced machinery, the curves can be significantly less additional work. However they may then upcharge all jobs to cover the greater capital expenditure for the advanced machinery. I agree that they should have told you that it would cost more at the time they suggested it.

Thank you chickeadeemelrose! I'm not even a novice (yet!) at birding but am so interested....! I have the Audubon Field Guide, Stoke's Field Guide,Birds of North America & Birds of New Mexico (I live in Albuquerque) & using them all I get SO confused!

These Thrashers have been in my back yard now for several years but stay rather hidden but I did get a decent photo of one after a snow storm. Right now the greatest numbers are the grackles ... a love/hate relationship with me! They have chased even the starlings & crows away(!) but an occasional robin, sparrow, yellow & red finches & an occasional roadrunner still come visit. Oh, & the mourning doves & hummingbirds seem to be completely unaffected by the grackles. The male grackles are SO funny: they strut towards each other with their heads held way back & wings fluttering & screaming. The females get the dry dog food, go to the birdbaths & dunk it up & down like a donut til it is soft enough to feed her lazy 'teenager' -that is as big as she is- sitting on the birdbath with it's mouth open! They are forever bathing in the birdbaths & in the fish pond (how they know not to sink & drown in the pond water I don't know!). Now I read of their cannibalism on this site so they don't look so cute any more!!

Hi vieja,

I am pretty much new to this too and really find it so much fun, especially reading about others' experiences and opinions about different aspects of birding.

Up here in the Boston area we have the house sparrows to battle with. If you let them they will take over everything, feeders especially. I thought they were lovely innocent little birds until I put my feeders up...and I gradually got the idea, and then read about them on this forum, which confirmed what I was seeing!

I hope you stick with the forum, I have enjoyed it so much and there are really nice, helpful people here, I look forward to checking the posts every day.

Curved-bill thrashers are medium-sized birds, larger than a mockingbird. They are greyish, brownish, with bright orange eyes. And they love fruit!

I see them digging holes in the dirt

Hmm ... I don't think the bird I see is that big, lazygardens & it's bill appears to be thinner than this picture. Haven't gotten close enough to tell the eye color though yet.

Brown Thrasher? The western edge of their range is in NM.

Lazygardens: No, it definately is not a wren or a brown thrasher (no breast spotting). The bird I'm seeing is definately gray;I must now try & see the color of the eye though!

Lazygardens: YES! Today I saw two of these birds on the ground in the cactus gardens. Usually they are in the grape vines ... fruit still on the vines ... & they DO have an orange eye! So they are curved bill thrashers then? They still appear to be the size of a 'smallish' robin & with a definite thin, curved bill. I have seen a couple of them in our yard for a few years now- both winter & summer.

Probably curved-bill thrashers, because it's the only bird with the bill and the behavior you describe.

They don't migrate.
