GPS help please

I'm playing around with a GPS system on my Palm, with which you import maps.

I'm importing from Autoroute 2006

If I put in a value of (say) 53 degrees 26' 52" N and 2 degrees 45' 35" W

Then the software I'm using CHANGES that to;

53 degrees 26 40.6 N 2 degrees 45 19.9 W

As I have no idea how GPS or co-ordinates work - I was hoping someone might know what it's doing and how I can get around it?

Andy - I asked a couple of friends who play around with those GPS outfits about your problem and they were both stumped! One did ask me that if you did find a solution to please post it so he would know, too!

Of course, I would'nt even know how to turn one of those things on!

Make certain your WAAS is on and the datum you are using is the correct one. And dont be afraid to go to www.geocaching.com to ask them at the forums

Florey, it has nothing to do with stylish or directness. As Puffy said, it's often not easy to convey in the title what a post is about. More than that, as others said, the posts very often wander from the original content intended, and we like it like that. Well, I think most of us do. There is a nice freedom here to let our minds wander where they will and express what any thread brings up even if not 'on topic'. It's really the heart of this place to me. These days there really aren't all that many posts to keep up with that I feel I miss many... eventually. If you find this hard to follow, just be glad you weren't here a decade ago when we were really prolific. Smiles. On the other hand, it's too bad you weren't. Relax, enjoy, read and post as you will.

Mari11...I have this one...It's a decent grower, very beautiful, gets red leaves if exposed to sunlight. Water it heavily, but don't leave it sitting in water. Water again once it gets dry. It seems to tolerate most temperatures, though certainly not cold...60's to 90's work best. Likes very bright light, or sunshine. It looks like any one of the finlaysonii's. We just got my daughter a Garmin Street Pilot 550c from Amazon for about $200. This one has an optional traffic service, which she wanted. Garmin also makes a similar model 580c, about $20 more, with a different traffic service (MSN Direct). As far as I can tell, the units are identical except for the traffic services. Difference in the services as follows: 550c uses an FM service, Direct Traffic or something like that. It comes with 3 months free, after that it's $60 per year. The 580c comes with one year free MSN Direct; thereafter you pay yearly or a lump sum of about $120, I think. Neither seems like a bad deal if you want the traffic service. Go to both sites and compare coverage. A word of caution, there are some comsumer reviews on the web talking about problems that people have had with the 550c "dying", and subsequent hassles with Garmin customer service. My D has not had any trouble with hers, and likes it a lot in general (also plays MP3 files, talking books, and has Bluetooth for the cell phone). Her boyfriend has a Magellan unit for which he paid about $130 and he likes that one (no traffic service). Steve

Looks like some do and some don't. The wi-fi only ones don't. I Googled your Q. and this seems like the most direct answer from a credible source with recent info. Your GPS is probably storing it's latitude/longitude in a different format. Your input appears to be in sessagessimal format (I probably spelled it wrong) but it is typically shortened to DMS (as in Degree Minutes Seconds) and your GPS may be set to DD (as in deciman degrees) so it would internally convert it from DMS to DD and display it in DD, even though it is the SAME waypoint.

The biggest thing is to make sure your lat/long is in the same map datum as your GPS... Most USGS quads are in eith NAD27 (North American Datum 1927) but there may be newer ones like WGS-82, etc. This is horizontal datum if you're GPS specifies which and if you have muliple NAD27 datum, select (NAD 27 CONUS). If you enter a NAD27 lat/long into a GPS set to say WGS-82, your waypoint will be off. Not much in the case of WGS-82 vrs NAD27 but in some obscure datum, you could be off a lot!
