camping in NY 2012

Yup feels like camping. NO Electric. Cool,in the mid 40s. Lanterns burning, sleeping bags. Coleman stove and grill ablaze for cooking. Thermals and sweat clothes on for sleeping. Yea, it feels like camping. Only it's within my own home. After Sandy, pitch black outside with no end in sight. 200 year old oak nextdoor took down the power lines and the luxuries of suburban living with it. Glad there's camping in our blood with all of its luxuries at our disposal.

Stay safe everyone. Others are in a lot worse shape that we are.

Glad to see you are still alive, Elliot! That 200 year old oak makes me think about the BIG oak that stands 15 feet from my back door! Somebody asked why i let it stand there. I tell them it is too big to move!
When we have a storm, i sort of get antsy thinking about it, but it seems to be standing well, and its leaves are all down now. they act as a sail in summer. Also, there are a bunch of other large trees in the woods at the back of the lot.Only problem is the LEAVES! Zillions of leaves! And, the weather has been too wet to gather them up with my lawn tractors, so they just lay there. But, they made good shade in summer!
We had no problems from the storm. Been rather nice here all week, but chilly today! And, a bit of rain.

Topcat, I have lived here for 30+ years and know many people with cabins, and have never heard of anyone breaking in. We did have people take our posted signs down. We have a camping spot where we leave all kinds of stuff all winter long and nobody has touched it. Could be futher upstate that stuff might happen, but not in our neck of the woods. Could also be a rumor started by locals to keep "city people" away. Anyway, I am not concerned about it. There will be a cabin put up for our use and maybe for rent someday. Last year I only had one pair of slip on - no back loafers type leather shoes (easy airport shoes). My feet and shoes got wet from the dew - not a big deal to sew, as I also sew without shoes- but the the floor in the Sloan Center got kinda messy from our shoes. I'm bringing another pair to use to walk outside to avoid this. I still need easy slip on for the airport.

Kate, I didn't want to start another thread, but I wanted to let you know that someone is selling a Featherweight in Orlando on Craig's List. It looks a little rough and lacks the case, but I bet it could be restored and I think it's a deal for 100 bucks... seems like they don't know what they have. I'd get it myself if I had more room! Anyway, if you have any quilting friends who have been wanting a Featherweight, I just wanted to pass that along.... I check C/L every day for sewing machines (and vacuums), but something has to be really special or rare to follow me home because I simply haven't the room... Ithaca and the Finger Lakes region is a favorite getaway of mine. Ithaca is a little more than 1 hr away from Syracuse. It's a college town (Cornell and Ithaca College) so there's lots to do-- there's a nice little downtown shopping area with the range of funky shops and indie bookstores you'd expect of a college town. Lots of restaurants and types of cuisine also. The tourism tagline is Ithaca is Gorges to reflect the large number of beautiful gorges/waterfalls all with hiking trails along, around and overlooking the falls. There are so many inns and B&Bs in the finger lakes but we always used Ithaca as the base. We were often content to stay right in town and if we wanted to hit the wineries and small towns around the lakes, the drives were easy with Ithaca as a starting point. http://www.visitithaca.com/
