Lake George, any recommended campgrounds?

Heading there with a family of four. 8 and 10 year old kids. Would like a tent campground with some facilities. A pool might be preferred if not directly on the lake. We'll probably be there the last week of August so I'd like to make a reservation as soon as possible. The pictures on the net make them all look great but a personal experience would be ideal.

We camped at the Schroon Lake Resort. There were a ton of very expensive RV's. We went in our small older motorhome, but we try to keep the camping more primitave. There were 20 vacant sites around up but they put someone right next to us for the whole weekend. The river was very nice, next time I will ask for a more private river site, that would make it nicer. They had a very nice BBQ for fathers day. It was very clean. My 2 yr. old daughter was bored. The older kids rented neat bikes and went tubing on the river. The pool was nice. The rec. room was nice. We just didn't like all the RV people who weren't "campers". We felt very out of place, but we are country people and these people were from the city mostly and a fully furnished 30 foot RV might be roughing it to them. We were looking for a more close to nature experience. If you are going as tourist this might be a good place for you and the kids.
We also went to a state park there years ago. I'll see if my husband remembers that place. I liked it better, and it was closer to Lake George.

Thank you everyone, especially pinetree30! I will definitely stop by the Eddy Arboretum on my way up to the mountains. I will start out in the Tahoe/Desolation Wilderness and marvel at some fine Abies magnifica stands, then head south to Calaveras Big Trees, and to the east side of the Sierras in an attempt to collect Pinus monophylla seeds. If there is time, I will continue on to the Kings Canyon/Kearsarge Pass area. I will take my camera and share the picture when I return. Resin Â I have seen larches at high elevations in the Stanislaus NF area. Those would have been Larix occidentalis? - There is a little town in the area named Tamarack.

I've camped up by Lake George a few times. I've stayed at (2) state parks - one is Lake Luzerne and the other is Moreau Lake. Both are within a 15 to 20 minute drive from Lake George. Far enough away from the tourist hustle around Lake George, but also far enough away that you can enjoy some Adirondack camping. Not sure about the trailer or electric accomodations at the parks (we tent), but I'm sure they have some. When we went up that way, I also had my son with us who was about your son's age. Always had a good time. Lot's to do in and around Lake George.

Google Camping World and ask for their camping magazine, and catalog. Don't go over-board in buying stuff, but you can get ideas there. One or two words of advice for tent trailer campers: Do not camp in bear country! Bears have sharp claws and teeth, and a thin canvas won't keep you safe! But, if you insist--buy more life insurance, don't cook in the camper, don't store food in it, and, be ready to jump into the car if bears are near! (Have the keys with ya--the bears won't hand them to ya so you can get out of there--they do not want their next meal escaping, without a little taste of it! And, they ain't as friendly as Yogi and Boo-boo! And, do not keep your food in the car! Bears always have the window keys!

We have a pop-up camper. We've camped in several western states at various campgrounds including national parks, forestry service, BLM and a few others. Most are a lot less expensive than the KOA costs mentioned above. Most have cost $15-$25 per night. Some spots are even free. It all depends on your wants and needs. We have a generator and don't necessarily have to be attached to water or electricity. If you're going to be camping in certain states on a regular basis, it would be worth it to buy a couple of books that detail the campgounds within a state, their views, amenities, comfort, etc. You can also look up some info on-line so you know what to expect. My dh always likes to plan his trip before we go. Sometimes we get the campgrounds we want and sometimes they are full. Some campgrounds are reservable and others are not. The book can usually give us ideas on other areas to look. It will also let you know if the camping area is big enough for your RV. The books are also good for sightseeing ideas that we would have otherwise missed. There are also on-line forums for those who like to camp. It's nice to have a first hand account on whether an area is worth your time or not.

I've camped at Lake George a couple of times with my family several years ago. We stayed at Lake Luzerne which is about 5 miles outside Lake George. We also stayed at Moreau Lake state park which is outsidd Glens Falls. Neither have swimming pools, but both have lakes. Luzerne is probably the quieter of the two, but for a family with a couple of youngsters I would go with Moreau Lake. Its is very close to Glen Falls, stores, etc. It's also got the cleaner showers of the two, and a larger swimming area. Have a good time!
